What makes you thinkg UWE might not pay for that? (Assuming it costs.)
Release/Pre-Order sales are immensely important. It is just like weekend-release box-office for movies.

I'd imagine it's something related to this. While UWE and Valve are talking, I'm sure the topic came up "you got how many pre-orders on your own?" If they see how awesome the game did by word of mouth, it should do that much better when there's some premium ad space donated and then everyone who sees it on Steam spreads the word.
Or maybe Valve likes indie underdog stories, who knows?

Either way, I'm sure Valve is more than happy to get a huge buzz-worthy title on there. No matter what % cut they get, it will be a LOT bigger :D

Other companies would complain if they showed favoritism and gave this game advertising that's clearly outside of UWE's budget. A massive discount or doing advertising for free won't happen.

haha this place is as bad as the bnet forums! Y'all so wacky!
1) Do you think Charlie + Cory are lying? Or do you think they were lied to? What would the theoretical liar have to gain from their lies? 2) On what grounds would any other company complain? Steam belongs to Valve, who can do with it as they please. If they want to give away free advertising, they can. Anyone that whined about that being "unfair" would be rightfully laughed at.
You guys are getting ahead of yourselves. Before thanking Valve or acussing UWE of lying let's take a look at the facts.
- Neither Charlie nor Cory said UWE would be getting a special treatment. - Cory said UWE doesn't pay money for it. - What Persian described in the OP (banner that takes up the entire window) is not what shows up on Steam.
I think the logical conclusion is that Valve puts up release announcements for interesting games on their own. Probably so that people can see what they can buy, after all that is how Steam makes money for Valve.

We came to an agreement on the understanding that Gabe and Brian would be able to exchange notes on beard-care products.

Yeah its there, cycle along the highlights on steam store front page.
That is the standard banner that almost all games get. But I have seen some games get HUGE banners that take up the entire page. That is what I was talking about.

And a few more games going back in time

Awesome! Congratulations on the success so far man :D

Ah! I recognize you from your profile image. I watched the UWE pax panel and was like "damn, who's the hot one next to the beardy guy?"
It's actually kind of weird that it's the one using a quote of the Deliverance rapists as his name. =x
Er, grats on the ad or whatever.
