When all steam users can play NS2
I'm so nervous for october when NS2 will finally be released on steam.
I'm really hoping that we're ready for this EPIC moment. Will we handle the pressure? So many new people will appear :D
Will our community server operator handle the pressure? I do fear that lots of our community servers still have low tickrate and that many operators have 22+, When they only can handle 18 slots servers. Can't we all just meet up, drink some beer and optimize our servers? :D
Anyways, let's all prepare for the big release.
I recommend all of use that has groups on steam to actually use it now.
Steam made big update to groups. So I've updated my steam discussion, giving out tutorials how to establish your own ns2 servers :)

Very few like the HBZ servers can handle 20+ with a decent tick rate.
I'm sure we'll eventually get to 32 player servers running great with future optimizations after 1.0
And they all should be up and running ready to go before the game gets released.

All-In's 24 player server has 30 tickrate near continuously.

Thats what i worry about the most...
There wont be enough servers for release, there are no regular big serverhosters that can provide good enough machines to run even 12player servers decent. (e.g. gameservers.com, while you can rent a ns2 internationally there - its the worst tickrate you can imagine even below 10players)
So there will be a ###### ton of ppl fighting over server slots, and a big amount of ppl will have to play on crap servers - with loads of them visiting the forums after...
But there is still time, i hope everything will work out fine with all the additional optimizations till release day.
I'll be putting up another 15 or so servers by the time the game is released. I can't expand much further than that without people actually renting the servers, but I will be doing what I can to get another 300-350 player slots for release day.
I'm not sure we'd need that many servers. Looking at the Steam playercount stats most of the major non-Valve indie games are 5000 max concurrent playercount or less, which at 20 players/server means we'd need around 250 servers. More realistically, Killing Floor (which I'd say is a successful indie games that can provide some guidance for NS2) peaked at around 2750 players, or 138 servers @20 players/server, which is not that far off from the roughly 100 servers we have up right now. I'd say if we can get 200-250 servers up by the v1.0 release (to capture the release day crowd) that would be sufficient.
Also, I'm planning and would recommend anyone with powerful enough hardware/connection to run a server off their desktop on release day to catch the overflow. The worst case scenario would be to pull a D3 and have people unable to find an open server.
Having too many servers for launch day just isn't possible, imo. :)
So excited!!
