Don't know any solid fixes but somewhere between build 216 and 218 I've stopped being able to connect to any games for longer than a few seconds either.

Typically the first game I try to connect to will happily authenticate and start connecting, but it'll take so long loading that the connection will time out before I finish (it doesn't seem to hang, watching in the console new messages will pop up gradually all the way through the wait, but eventually it drops to main menu with a "timeout" message before it finishes).

The next time I try the loading will be much quicker and I'll connect to a game but shortly thereafter I'll get the red connection error icon, all the sounds will start looping and it'll stay like that forever. Trying "retry" I'll get an instant "authentication failed" message and kicked to the main menu.

Tried turning off windows firewall and setting up as DMZ as well as the normal port forwarding, no difference. After a fresh reinstall the very first game I got in worked, but after DC'ing because of a crash every game since will lose connection about a minute after the authenticating just like before.

Steam authentication servers haven't been giving me trouble in any other games, so I don't think the local ones are down or anything. It's more like that first session didn't end properly and every subsequent one won't work now.

Tried deleting clientregistry.blob in steam and reaquiring, because that works strange steam black magic sometimes but didn't help either.

Anyway, here's an example of a log text from a game session that breaks after a little while, however little that helps.

Someone I know had similar problem, it was related to steamworks shop not loading mods properly.

Try subbing / unsubbing stuff there and try own server.

Hmmm, wasn't subbed to anything on the workshop, and I've only tried on servers using stock maps. Tried subbing a bunch of maps on the workshop anyway and unsubbing again. Still had the same problem when both subbed/unsubbed.

Running my own server works fine for just me, didn't see if anyone could join though.

Same, I can run my own server with no problems but can't connect to any servers withotu crashing. Not subbed to any mods either.

It's still happening for me, tried verifying files in steam & re-installed but still nothing.

EDIT: It seems to work fine when I join a server by right-clicking on a friend & click "Join Game" or when I get invited to a game by a friend.

Still can't play the game, always disconnect after a minute or so, really starting to get to me.

Right, got mine behaving again by dissabling intrusion detection and cutting down the UDP timeout wait on my thomson router. It's apparently a common steam problem for that router although I've only recently started experiencing it with NS2.

Bicsum provided instructions on slashing the UPD timouts in a thread yonks ago (which he seems to have got directly from the be* forums)

And while you're messing with the .ini file search for
"[ ids.ini ]
config state=enabled"
and change that to config state=disabled turn off intrusion detection if you want to, probably not necessary for joining but makes hosting work far better.

Refunds are not possible at this time.

I have no idea what would cause this problem for you - we're not getting many reports of this problem. Have you checked your firewall settings (or completely turned it off)? Perhaps something gets blocked.

If that doesn't cut it, just let us know, I'll try and bring this under the attention of one of the devs for you.

I could play the game with no problems up to build 218, just started then. Doesn't matter what server I join, always freezes after approx a minute. After 40 seconds or so I get sent back to the menu with a "Timeout" error, after that I don't get any servers when I refresh in the server list until I restart the game.

When I'm frozen in-game, I can access the menu & console though, and I've tried typing in "retry" in the console and then I get "Authentication Failed".

Tried re-installing the game, restarting rouder, disabling firewall, nothing worked. Only experiencing this in this game so far.
And I would never get this game refunded, was just really irritated back then, apologies.

If there's anything more you need to know or want me to try, just let me know.

Tried on another computer, same thing. It's something with my steam acc, can't figure out what.

The only thing I can think of trying is changing your download region in Steam. NS2 requires a connection to Steam (for authentication) to play, so it sounds like somewhere along the line you losing your connection to steam while in-game.
