<div class="IPBDescription">is it possible?</div>i been thinking about starting a mod using NS2 where marines fight waves of aliens while doing objectives in large outdoors maps. is it possible to create large outdoor maps and use/add vehicles? if ns team arent going to add vehicles i could model some myself in the style of the marines equipment if it's allowed. i would like the mod to focus on outdoor battles.

Large outdoor maps? Possible, NS1 had a few outdoor maps, you just have to be smart with it.

    Vehicles? I seriously doubt it.

    Short answer: No.

    Long answer: Noooooooooooooo.
The engine was not built for this. Even indoor rooms have to be designed specifically with size limits in mind due to the engine limiting entity updates past a certain distance.
There is also no proper occlusion culling system for outdoor environments.
Additionally, I doubt you can implement proper vehicle physics without touching the engine.

The max view distance in the engine is about 1536 units. This means that the distance the player can see has to be less than that.

Bear in mind, the player is 76 units tall, so you can only 'see' 20 players height into the distance. That is not very far at all.

Creating a player model to 20 units high, you would have a playing field of about 76 times their height, but still that is way too tiny for an outdoor map.

Thanks for the reply peeps. i got nothing but love for the NS team. they gave me many many hours of fun but i read somewhere about how they said NS2 is something like one of the most modifiable games out or something along the most modifiable. shouldnt be saying things like that if it cant be supported. either way i love NS1/2 and i hope NS2 does very good. keep up the great work NS team you always had and will have my support.

so the "large outdoor" maps are out... how about regular sized outdoor maps without vehicles but with plenty'O'mechs and airstrikes for the marines and swarms "alien airstrikes" for the aliens? think that would be possible?

Well, I don't doubt that its possible, but you'd be running into performance issues. This is something you might want to talk to Max about, since he knows the limitations of the engine the best.

Just because something is highly modifiable, doesn't mean it can do anything.

HL was highly modifiable, but how many battlefield clones did you see on the engine? None, because it can't handle it. NS2 is more moddable because of the tools and accessibility, not neccesarily because it can create any environment you dream of..
