Spectator servers

definitely a post 1.0 feature
So I was thinking after the BBC tournament, that it would have been interesting to be a spectator on some of those games, but that obviously, server slots are at a premium at such an event. But perhaps there's a way for this to work?

Here's the concept: a server coordinates all of the player and structure locations and status, and sends that information to each player that's logged in, correct? So why could it not send that information to a second server, which would allow that second server to create the game in real-time. Since the second server wouldn't have to do any calculations (did player X successfully strike player Y), perhaps the CPU requirement would be less intensive, and you could have 16 spectators (or more?) log in to spectate the game? You could even build in a time-delay to prevent cheating as is currently the case in live casting.

I have no idea if this is technically feasible: but I thought it would be interesting if it were possible!

It most certainly is tecnically feasible, just look at HLTV. How easy it is to implement in NS2 and how important a feature, I don't know. HLTV was more important back before the modern streaming services and the increases in bandwidth, so maybe this feature could pretty easily replaced by casts and streams.

Btw our match server has 24 slots and is often pretty full during matches. This has never seemed to impact the game (as only 12 clients are actually playing), so possibly the strain on an spectator-only server should be pretty limited.

Personally I would like to see a HLTV-like feature in NS2 also, but it would have to have a delay and I think many would still prefer a caster narrating the game.

We've used the same, well-known and easy to remember password for ages. It has been also used for gathers and for when we let other teams use the server for their matches. We usually only kick out extra spectators if someone really needs the slot. We mostly don't mind others spectating and it is good for the community, so this password arrangements works well and lets competitive players who know us spec matches easily. If this arrangement will start making problems, we'll just change the password and lower the server size from 24 to something closer to 14-16...

Oh, and we do have a pre-agreed backup password or two, just to get some privacy if we don't want a crowd ;)
