NS2 crashes when i search for a server

<div class="IPBDescription">HALP PLEZ</div>90% of the time when i want to play NS2 and i search for a server, I am not allowed to for when I hit refresh, the whole game crashes, but not in the typical way.
My screen goes black, I go and cntrl alt del and use the task manager, and end process. even then the window is still open, and I cannot access my desktop, or any other windows I have opened. the only way to fix it is a hard reboot.
Any ideas on why this is being caused?
PC specs:
Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate
i7 940
dx58s0 MB
6 gigs ddr3 ram
SSD, with the game installed on a secondary 1 TB hard drive (steam allows me to save games to other hard drives, Thanks steam!)
1920x1200 monitor samsung syncmaster t240
air cooled
