Lag + hang = fail (and painful)

<div class="IPBDescription">The UI seems to keep sync with the game code, but not without issues.</div>I commonly get in a game and deal with lag (especially at the beginning of the round).
It seems strange to me that during lag, that I can't hit escape or that the UI is completely inaccessible. There have to be some UI aspects that can be run in a separate thread. That way if the game really hangs, I'll know if its simply lag or a real hang/crash.

And to comment on the initial lag spikes, I'm wondering if there's an issue with precaching (takes a while) as users download content from the server? Would that slow things down? Am I streaming game content as I play?
