With a week remaining, let's discuss how far NS2 has come.
I've been around for a while. As you can see, the register date for this account was about a month before the first Natural Selection was released. I was in the IRC channel awaiting the release, totally hyped for the game, knowing it would be straight-up magical. Come release time, I played the game for hours. Servers were chaotic, aliens were building everything all wrong, the marine commanders were placing things in the worst positions, and skulks were dying by the millions. Pure, unbridled, beautiful chaos! So much fun was had, I told all my friends to download the mod and soon enough we were taking the game seriously, whooping up on newbies and eating experienced players for breakfast.
Here we are, a whopping ten years later. Seriously, can you name another game franchise that holds people's interest for ten years? I can't. NS1 put this style of game on the map, and it is still rarely attempted or imitated because it is complex and ridiculous to balance. Flayra and Co. have been doing this for ten years, so I guess they have the benefit of experience, but you have to admit how damn impressive this game really is. Just a few guys have built this game from scratch, a proprietary (and extremely mod friendly) engine, and basically a new genre*. Give them credit where it is due, don't complain about late patches, and just enjoy the kick-ass game they have worked so hard to provide us. Criticism is good, though, I doubt this game would be a week from release without it. As an aspiring game developer, it's easy for me to get a little awestruck with what they've done. Game design is incredibly tough, especially at the level that Natural Selection sits.
I guess I'm just trying to say that it is totally awesome that after ten years, Natural Selection is seeing a commercial release on Steam. Make sure you give them the congratulations they deserve!

But yeah, wish I had been along for more of the ride, here. Still, it's come a long way even from where I'm standing.
