Envelope mode?

Hi everyone.

I've just purchased my pre-order of NS2. I've been playing NS since NS1 days and have been waiting almost a decade for this new game! :D

I just wanted to check something though. In some Valve games, you can set the display options to show the game in an enveloped mode so that it displays in widescreen on a standard monitor.

I have a standard monitor at the moment, and I don't mind playing the game all warped or whatever in a standard display resolution, but I wonder if this game has an option for envelope mode. Like what happens on youtube vids -- when the video is widescreen, and I select full-screen mode, the youtube player creates two horizontal black bars above and below and shows me the video in enveloped-mode widescreen.

Is there something similar in this game? My gfx card is a GTX 550 Ti.

Please note, I don't mean windowed-mode.

Now to apply some anti-troll clauses:

-Yes, I do realize that UW is not Valve. Valve was just an example.

-And before anyone says it, I'm asking whether an option is available in this game for my current monitor. I don't need any responses along the lines of "get a new monitor". I'm happy with the monitor I have now, so I'm just asking if this setting is available.

Thanks very much for any information.

I don't think that's in the game. Tough, since I play on 800x600 on a 16:9 monitor, there are two vertical bars to the left and right, and when I play on >16:9 resolution, I get two horizontal bars above and below the game frame. Do you know if your graphics card supports this mode? I know my old card didn't support it, but my new one does automatically.

Hey thanks for the informative reply! :)

I think my card might support this. Sadly I don't have any recent games to try it out with.

Anyway I think I'll just have to wait and see if I can tinker with gfx card settings once the game's released.

This is just a stop-gap anyway. Hopefully the game will last with decent user participation for a few years, and when I buy my next PC I'll have a widescreen HD monitor and will be able to enjoy NS2 in all its glory then!

Thanks for the help and advice :)

Some monitors automatically scale and stretch the image to fit the entire screen if it is not the monitor's native resolution. Some monitors have an option to disable this. Explore the monitor's menu too! It should go something along the lines of display scaling.

I believe the "Full screen windowed mode" has black edges, and fits to your chosen resolution.

OK So I just played the release today.

In case anyone was wondering, the game automatically displays the horizontal black bars above and below, so that you get a "virtual" widescreen.

My PC is 2008 era quad core 2.8ghz (i think), 4gb ram, with recently purchased GTX 550 TI 1gb ddr5 (to replace 2x 9800gt).

Plays like a dream, and in 720p HD I think.

ALSO, THIS GAME IS AWESOME AND WELL WORTH THE DECADE OF WAITING!!!!!!!!!!
FLAYRA AND THE REST OF THE TEAM AT UW YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!
THIS IS A PERFECT UPGRADE TO NS1!!!!
