    I generally listen to any commander who gives me waypoints / guard orders. Commanders who give only build orders generally have less of a plan.

    Any commander that outlines his strategy has my complete attention.

    When I'm commander, I try to do both.

    TAKE HEART PEOPLE!!!!
    Not all is doom and gloom....out there good servers exist and this mod comes to life. I just played on one and winning gave me such a high ive decided to spread a little happiness. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
    I have got tired of joining aliens, although it is alot of fun. I wanted to be part of a well organised marine team and i wanted to win.
    This all came true in the game i just played, a 16 player server on Ns_Nothing.
    After a quick base setup the team basically twiddled there thumbs for 3 minutes defending the resource node nearest to the base and killing the rushing hordes of skulks. After about three mins i volunteered to go scouting. After killing a few skulks on the way i ended up in the empty maintainance hive.
    I singlehandedly built a small base there, holding off several skulks from getting there fangs into me.
    With the hive and resource node secure the team prowled the midsection of the map taking out anything gorgs had built and claiming res points.
    A few minutes later still, the aliens got fades and cloaking, these were a pain to fight off but we held them back for a precious few minutes, mostly due to a player called vlr, while the comm finnished reaserching advanced weapons and armour.
    Once we had these a team assault on their second hive seemed to naturally develop.
    Having fought our way to the hive we built our last base there. Equiped with jetpacks one or two marines impudently flew into the aliens last hive and destroyed it before they could defend themselves.
    Needless to say the game ended 3o seconds later when the last <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> went splat!
    I thouroughly enjoyed this game and it really made NS shine

    comm can be frustrating

    Mines at the beginning of the game? That's a good idea, I'll have to try that.

    And about being god, 1 in 10 marines will last more that 30seconds by himself in alien territory.

    <b>AMEN!</b>

    I agree with you completely. I really don't care if the marines use pistols or LMG, but for christ sakes they should follow waypoints, and be confident that the commander has a plan. I was commander on ns_nothing, and this is how it was.

    6 Resource Nodes (Well guarded with well placed turrets. About 4-6 per node)
    Alien Scan Upgrade
    Level 3 Armor Upgrade
    Level 3 Weapon Upgrade
    Cargo Bay Hive (2 Turret Factories, 10 Turrets, 3 Siege Cannons)

    I just gave everyone HA/JP and HMG/GL at base. (They were all there for once.) Everyone was very happy with my commanding, we were kicking some serious **obscenity**, and then **obscenity** hit the fan.

    The aliens were attacking Cargo Bay. Everyone went through the Phase Portal, we restored Cargo Bay, and next thing I notice is that the Aliens were slowly taking down my Resource Nodes. I had about 300 extra resources left, so I had a plan to nuke both their hives with siege turrets. Taking over resource nodes will take too much time, and they are going to take it over again. The chance of casaulty was greater taking over resource nodes as well, since thats what the aliens were focusing on. This is what my army consisted.

    9 Marines Total

    5 - HA/HMG/WELD
    2 - HA/GL/WELD
    2 - JP/GL/WELD

    That's pretty damn sweet.

    I gave all of them waypoints to the Great Viaduct. While the Fades were being busy taking out my resource nodes, I was going to secretly nuke their hive to death. So, I gave my team the waypoints, sit around for about 2 minutes, and WHAT THE **obscenity**?!?!

    Three Marines made it to the waypoint. 2 of them were my RL friends. Other guy was a random guy.

    Everyone else, was either fighting the enemies at resource nodes, going to Power Silo, or got lost, got killed, and was begging me for HA/HMG.

    THIS WAS RIGHT AFTER I TOLD THEM MY PLAN AND THE WAYPOINT. THEY SCATTERED ALL OVER THE MAP.

    We lost position at the Great Viaduct very quickly, and by that time the aliens were slowly advancing towards our base. I gave everyone HA/HMG/GL/JP/WELD again, had only like 100 rescources left now. Lo and behold, this time only my RL FRIENDS made it to the same Waypoint. Everyone else was spamming me with, Commander resource node here.

    I was not gonna build resource nodes because they will just take it over AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

    Apparently they did not understand the word PLAN.

    They were being cowboys.

    So please, just listen to your commander, follow the PACK of marines, please don't scatter, and get to your waypoint. Waypoint = Commander has a plan.

    So true. While I am not a newbie to the game I am not familiar with the comm interface. However we did have one game where the humans were losing and I took over the comm station because noone else wanted it. We needed to make a push to a resource node but had problems with Fade's popping in and out against the main base (which is about all we had). I dropped a turret factory in the corner of the room and was greeted by:
    OMG, fawking newb, kick him!

    *boot* Ejected.

    I wonder if these mighty mental monstrosities paused for a moment to understand 2 things:

    1: Redundant TFs in the main base shores up defenses as it removes the single point of failure that the human turrets have.

    2: TFs can control turrets <b>through walls</b>.

    The fades were coming up on the west side, the TF was on the forward east corner so we could drop 3 turrets outside the door in the hallway to give cover for the marines to build another TF at the end of the hallway which would support sieges to take out the OC/DC and RC we needed to take for a push onward to the hive.

    Nope, they saw a commander dropping something they thought was unneeded and booted him in under 30 seconds. Sad.

    I dont even play Marine anymore because of the stupidity of the Marine players out there. Instead I play as Khaara. Its funny I expeirence more teamwork with the so called deathmatch team(Khaara) than I do with the team that is supposed to be all about teamwork(Marines).

    You have no idea how many times I've been booted from the CC, only because llamas thought that if I didn't do exactly what they would do, I am a newbie and should be kicked. As much as you would like some turrets in the main base, I MAY NOT. Everyone else may do it, I DON'T CARE. I'll give you tripmines as a temporary defense to the main base, and save the main resources for the hive base which I plan to set up without the minute. Just because I use a little offense in my strategy at the very begginning rather than turtling up doesn't mean I suck. In every game where I have seen the marines turtle up, aliens win - hands down. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Agreed. Unfortunately, I've only seen this used once, and I think you were the commander.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->3) <b>Use your pistol in the beginning of the game, not your light machine gun.</b>
    People completely underestimate the power of the pistol. Unless you have the aim of a deranged chimpanzee, chances are, you'll kill a skulk/gorge faster with the pistol than with the LMG. Rather than draining your LMG ammo and switching to pistol, drain your pistol then swicth to LMG. It'll keep you alive! Really!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I'm not so sure about that. Unless it's fairly long distance, skulks are too fast to hit with the pistol.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->4) <b>Be smart with your tripmines.</b>
    I have seen way too many idiots using the tripmines I bought stupidly. If I give you tripmines, place them in preparation of a SKULK coming through the entrance. Than means place them in narrow doorways (in all possible heights of entrance), vents, and if possible, two at a time (two are generally needed to fry a skulk extra crispy). Please, PLEASE do not put them in wide corridors where only an elephant with rabies would possibly trigger them. That's just a waste of my money.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Agree, but it's not a good idea to call RP's "my money".

    Also, once they have two hives, forget about the mines in general.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->5) <b>YOU ARE NOT GOD!</b>
    If I give you waypoints in groups, please, MOVE OUT IN GROUPS. A lone marine is a skulk snack. A lone marine trying to built an entire base is DOUBLY a skulk snack. If I tell only 1 person to built, and everyone else to guard the doorways and vents, ONE PERSON BUILD, AND EVERYONE ELSE GUARD A DOORWAY OR VENT. I don't bloody care how quickly the building finishes if you all build it at the same time, the buildings will be skulk food and a huge waste of resources if you all DIE!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I disagree with that last part, especially if it's a turret. There's no way a skulk can kill four guys before they either complete the turret, or one of them stops building and gets his gun out.

    I have some guidelines for commanders, but I think I'll put them in a new thread.

    lol. A skulk can kill 4 marines in 2 seconds if they are building. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Heh, I had the OPPOSITE of your game last night, and while I haven't been a commander very many times I felt I did a pretty good job.

    Yes, the first thing we did was expand to one of their hive locations. About halfway through the map everyone started to understand that moving in a group == pretty much unstoppable. From that point on they were basically a plow pushing the aliens all the way across the map till we took out their last hive.

    Lots of fun. We were staying in contact so much that we were crowding the mic <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    If youve got 4 marines together and they are all building a single turret you should get at least 1 to guard them otherwise your begging for a horrible death to your little group.

    Half a second per marine? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> I don't think so.

    There is plenty of time to switch back to the LMG before the skulk gets you.
