NS2 connection issues

I have heard from a couple of people about this and i have experienced it myself. when you start ns you can see all the servers. when you try to join a server you get a cannot connect to server. then you try to refresh serverlist again and nothing comes up, at all. you can try to join your own game and sometimes it works and sometimes it says can not authenticate. sometimes you can get lucky and get into a server but not very often. i have tried all the fixes for connection issues i have yet to find a fix. anyone have any ideas?
