Considering joining a team or Steam Group

Uncertain about what I want and would enjoy
I'm too tired to keep editing this post, hopefully I'm not rambling as much as I think I am.

In games that have rank up or weapon unlock systems, I tend to play as often as I can, because I enjoy the game and also because I have little things to look forward to along the way. But this also leads to very abrupt burn-outs where my activity drops to almost nothing; pubs can only keep me going for so long. I don't really look for friends to play with in online games much less clans, teams or guilds. I've gone through several groups/teams/guilds in various types of games that never got the leadership, growth or activity they needed to be stay alive and fun. I would lose interest in them very quickly, and it makes me feel less inclined to continue trying. With the exception of a few quality mmo guilds from when I first started online gaming (and one fantastic minecraft server I'm still active on), my experience has been otherwise lackluster

Natural Selection 2 doesn't have anything like that (rank ups or unlocks) and I certainly don't think it needs it. That being the case, I feel like having people to play with would simply give me more things to do besides pubs with randoms each day. I've sort of poked around the Competitive Play forums and even done some Google searching for groups not on the first few pages, and I'm uncertain if I want to join a Team, or just poke around for a Server/Steam group that's casual. Given how few teams/groups I've been able to locate, its not as easy to find what I might consider to be a sweet spot.

I have absolutely no experience with the competitive side of gaming other than watching recorded matches of games I really enjoy (and I'm already watching NS2 matches) and a few very brief experiences with non-competitive clans that played scrims. In most other games that had a pub side and a competitive/pug side, I've always considered trying out comp, but whenever I would poke around the recruitment details or the websites of the teams I'd tend to be intimidated by the activity requirements, even though I probably already meet those requirements playing on my own. I've also never had to deal with the chains of command some of the larger teams have (especially if they do multiple games).

So I don't know where to go to find a team or steam group on the casual side, or if I should just give comp teams a try.

Or maybe I'll wander the pubs forever~

Sounds like you need to gather. www.ensl.org

Good pub games are rare for me anymore. I feel playing in a more organized fashion is much more fun. Gathers are a great way to do that without joining a clan.

I think you would find Gathers (as mentioned above) interesting for two reasons:

    1) The more organised format makes the most of NS2's gameplay and can be great fun.

    2) It will allow you to find out how much you enjoy organised/competitive style play in NS2 and meet other people who do it.

If you decided you enjoyed the play style you could use the people you meet in Gathers to find a team too.

rantology made a great guide to Gathers on these forums, here.
