Female Marines!

Because I need to convince a friend to buy this
The title says it all. I keep poking my friends so that they buy this game and can play with me. Most of them didn't yet due to money issues, which has led to me making NEW friends right here at the game. Thanks for that! :D

However, there's ONE friend I have for whom it's a pretty important criteria that she can play a female character, and it DOES seem rather logical. This is the far future, we're in space, there should be women serving in military too. It also seems like a comparably small change - A new model, a new voice, no change in game balance or anything. If not UWE, I'd love if at least a modder could get to it, I'm fairly certain this will open the game to a lot more people than just my friend, too.
Thoughts?

Mama Onos? Nah, but seriously, what about the common objection of having different hitboxes, causing people to play as female to be less of a target? That would be a change in game balance, albeit it seemingly trivial.

How different would the hitboxes be, though? I mean seriously, the changes would be minimal, if at all. The armor they wear is probably not 100% skin tight, those are marines and not space lolitas afterall.

The dev's have already said many times they want female marine models, and are going to put them in.

However, as with many things, its going to be post-release sometime. No ETA on it.

Deluxe edition has concept art of the female marine, and I think I've seen the female marine model around somewhere bein worked on.

And about hitboxes, most online shooters that allow for multiple genders just have both share the same hitboxes. Women just end up being very tall (for the average), but they are still within the realm of realistic. Its not like the men in NS2 are hunking muscular cyborgs.

Edit: I think they still need to do voice acting for the female marine, but don't quote me on that.

Strong agree, but it is something that is apparently in the works already.

The female is one of their priorities, however it involves a LOT of work. Far more than most people realize, it's not just the case of putting a female model over the current animations. Females have different anatomy and body shapes, so would require new models and animations, which is pretty time consuming and expensive. BUT it is one of the priorities.

    Actually it kind of is.

Females don't serve on the front lines in the US Army as combatants for a reason, they aren't as physically strong as men. Say whatever you want, it's true. In a setting where teleportation, body reconstruction, and mechs exist, that doesn't really hold. I'd say they might have women serving but in a male body until they leave combat.

They don't serve as combatants in US because men treat women differently on a battlefield, and men can carry more.

We can assume the former will be gone in the future, and nanites seem to mean marines don't carry much at all. Thus all genders are equal in this battlefield.

Plus its a bloody game, and some people enjoy being portrayed in games as the same gender. Personally I prefer playing male, only playing female to see new content.

I think in a recent dev Q&A Cory said he's been working on the female marine lately? Obviously it requires a lot of work; new animations due to anatomical differences, new voice acting, and not one but three different models for the armour. I believe the basic version is already in (it was the first marine model used in those early development videos) so that's a start.

Anyway, if I remember correctly Cory said female marines would likely end up in the first major content update. Looking forward to it. :)

sounds like you are picturing the female marine to have armor everywhere except for chest plate.... :S

if its like marine at the top of the page it would be cool. i really like it now already how you have black armor, limited edition armor, normal armor, just provides a bit of variety.

it also lets me roughly know who to attack so i can annoy them lol :P

Whining about hitboxes is such a poor excuse for any 'competitive' player. I wouldn't respect anyone that tries to seriously make that argument in a competitive environment in a game where there are both male and female characters. It's not like males are Marcus Fenix and females are Kate Moss.

I do not know about the US Army, but saying women are not as strong as men physically is wrong. Our current society dictates that a women with a muscular body is not attractive, and that women are to be protected by men. It is rare to see a muscular woman, but their body can be as strong as the body of a man.

Yeah, the usual, tired and disproved arguments against female military service are pretty silly in this case. It's the future, it's a game, nanites, blah. There's absolutely no reason why there couldn't be female marines, as shown by the fact that it's something they are in fact actually working on.

I hope they're not spending too much time working on different animations and such, though. It's really not necessary to change the models too much; a fit, armoured-up person is not going to be much of a different shape or move differently because of gender. The fan-made female models in TF2 have exactly the same hitboxes as their male counterparts, for example. There aren't exactly a ton of voice commands in the game so voice-acting shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Of course the reason for this is generally "but why on earth would we have females in a videogame without giving them massive balloon-like breasts and other exaggerated attributes", but that's a rubbish reason.

I mean sure, I know it's easy to say all this when I'm not the dev working on these things, haha. But really, I think there's way too much emphasis in games on making females very obviously different from males for no good reason, and/or using that as an excuse to exclude them altogether.

And when it comes down to it, forcing everyone to play the same gender, if there's any possibility to do otherwise, is pretty much a ###### move.

I think the addition of female playable characters would be great. I know a girl who would also buy the game if she could play as a female. Personally though I'd just like to see female marines.

What always struck me silly about that argument is a girl refusing to play a game unless it has female models. I wouldn't want to play barbie dress up extravaganza if it had male models.

If you can't bite someone because their shoulders are slightly narrower or their waist measurements are slightly off, maybe you should be playing a less demanding game... Like farmville, or Train Simulator 2013.

Sorry, I've just heard that argued in a serious manner far too often and it blows my mind. Is it really that hard to aim at what you see, rather than spray/bite blindly and hope the hitbox happens to move in front of you? Also, hitboxes don't usually conform perfectly to the models they're attached to. They tend to be much simpler (for optimization's sake) and consequently larger in many areas than the visual model. Player models can be different while keeping the same hitbox, as long as size isn't dramatically changed and height remains consistent.

Anyways, lack of female marines wouldn't stop me from playing NS2, but it's nice to know they're in the works.

What you just said doesn't make any sense. This is a competitive game. So his argument is more than valid. What's stopping people from exploiting the female marine model to their advantage? Also, you will have a bunch of guys playing as female or even posing as female gamers. Which really takes away from the original point of having female models in the first place. To make female gamers more comfortable with the game. To be honest female gamers probably make up about 1% if that of NS2's community base. I don't think there will be a revolt on hand because there's no female models. No other FPS that's worth playing that I know of implements female models because of those exact reasons. The hitboxes are smaller, the movement will be different, and people will exploit it. It's just not realistic and the consequences outweigh the benefits if any.

male skeletal muscles are larger, faster and their power limits are far superior to female muscle structre. also male muscles are not fatigue resistant as women's do. meaning muscle fibers are easier to be teared with excessive work which is the basis of body building. apart from that male reflexes are proven to be far more superior to females. it is a fact that men are physically superior to women, its not about gender or anything else its about the genes.

women in average have able body to perform an infantryman's duties and training. but anything above it is far fetched(commandos, special forces, etc.).

but women are somehow good sharpshooters lol

You must play a lot of MMS. Female models were rampant in old school multiplayer FPS before the whole Cod craze started. Tribes 2, Quake 3, Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, Goldeneye 64, Serious Sam, just to grab a few off the top of my head. In fact, most of the actually interesting multiplayer shooters I've played have had female models, and often aliens and robots too.

Guess what? None of them have problems with hitboxes. Nothing says that women must be shorter than men, or that men must be hulking brutes in comparison. The argument assumes that all women must be confined to a rather creepily idealized image. Short, dainty, thin, weak. If that's what you think all women are, you need to get out of the house more.

Also, why is it a problem if men play female avatars? Are you planning on using the game as a dating service and afraid you'll hit on a dude? That's the only real "consequence" I can think of. As for how many girls play NS2, I am curious what the real numbers are. The typical assumption of men online is that only other men play shooters, but you have no idea who's really at the keyboard. A lot of women don't necessarily want it known that they're female when playing because it can bring unwanted attention from the more unsavory crowd. Jokes, harassment, insults, etc. I'm fine with people I don't know in FPS's assuming I'm a guy, and female models wont really change that. They'll just assume I'm a guy in a female avatar.

The point is, the hitbox "issue" is a dead horse that's been beaten to the point of being an unrecognizable pile of pulped meat and bone and the only real consideration is lore. In the tradition of Starship Troopers and Aliens, Natural Selection 2's TSF Frontiersmen appear to have already assimilated women into their ranks, as suggested by the banner at the top of their website, concept art, and numerous old posts on the subject of female marines.

Completely pointless side note: Yes, higher testosterone levels DO make men naturally stronger than women and more able to easily build muscle. However that does not in any way exclude women from strength and endurance training, or hamper their combat prowess. Reaction time, aim, and training are far more important than raw muscle ever will be. Note that we are already developing robotic exoskeletons that allow soldiers to carry more gear while reducing the strain on their bodies. Being able to carry the equivalent of a bag of cement on your back will be much less important in the future.
