Commanding -Accidental upgrades and other issues

I have only commanded a few times and one of the biggest problems is accidently upgrading things. Apparently cancel does nothing, when you accidently upgrade to shade. I helped loose a game from this. The small translucent icons against an infastated ground can be hard to see.

Also is there any way to find out what abilities you have? If someone ninja kills your carapice tower, you loose the ability and the I might only find out from a player that we dont have that ability anymore.

Aliens is a lot less stressful/task loading than marine commanding.

Lastly seems not to many people want to comm, I am not the biggest fan of it since I suck at multitasking. I wish more people wanted to do it, but I am feeling it will become less of an issue once people get to know the game better.

This happens to me all the time. The upgrade symbols floating on the map need to be more visible.

If you upgrade something accidentally you can cancel it and have plenty of time to do so. It's the bottom right button when you click on the hive again.

I know and I have but apparently it looks like your hive is still a vail hive. It almost like it is still upgrading in the background as after I cancel it I can drop vail towers a few minutes after i cancel it. Either that or I hit it accidently again in two seperate games. I need to test and reconfirm.

It's called shade, and no you probably just pressed the button again. I've accidentally upgraded a hive to the wrong thing a few times and cancelled it without incident.

I find really difficult to click on any marine structure without accidentaly researching something. I once reached weapons 3 before armor 1; at least my teammates didn't said anything, perhaps believing it was some secret commanding technique based on careful considerations over a spreadsheet.

The shortcuts should probably just bring you into the menu where you can then click on the thing for real. Would eliminate misclicks. The hovering icons then just serve as a reminder that "hey, you can upgrade things here!"

    I like that.
Plus they need to be more visible. They blend way to easily to the background.

Aren't the existence of these icons dictated by the "Commander help" option? I keep forgetting to disable that, and I was hoping that's what it is.

There should be helper icons, but clicking on them should not do anything. Anyone who's ever played an RTS knows that you click on the structure to research things, who expects an icon floating above the structure to absorb your mouse click?

As a side note, when I first started marine commanding I had a huge problem with accidental recycling, my structures would just be there one moment gone the next and I wouldn't know why. Took me a little while to realize that it was because I had bound V to voice chat. There should be some sort of warning prompt alerting you if a standard bind that is used in commander mode(like voice chat) conflicts with one of the comm hotkey binds.

    LOL^ (at binding V).

By the way, an easy way to tell which upgrades you have is to jump out of the hive and press B for a moment ;-) . Just saying.

I have the same issue when checking the map while commanding. Since default button for map is C, I either get an Shade hive or a Fade egg. Changed key binding but I'm so used to using C to check map...

You can both cancel upgrades and turn off the quick help buttons.

This is a carry-over issue from being unable to rebind command keys, and it my biggest problem with how the current command interface works. How many people out there have a Razer mouse with side buttons that would be perfect for command, but can't use them without binding your movement keys to the side buttons? It's just poorly implemented in the extreme, and the 'hover icons' simply exacerbate the issue rather than making it any 'easier' for anyone.

The 'escape' key will deselect your current selection sometimes, but then sometimes it brings up the menu. As others have said, trying to use the map can be a disaster if you aren't paying attention. These are issues that need to be ironed out soon. It's doable now, but it has the potential to be immensely frustrating in the heat of battle for even the most seasoned commanders.

EDIT: Ok, so I'm disabling that nonsense. Nifty there's an option, but the key binding issue remains.

As Khaara you always get that stupid "build chamber" pop up. I jsut wanted to click a cysts to rupture -.-

I once lost a game because I was not able to beacon.
the flipping "build Prot Lab" was right over my obs.

At that point I looked through the options, disabled that mothertrucker and I will never look back.

While I've made my suggestions known on this topic in another thread, I disagree that it will "Screw them over." Most players will only take commanding once they've got a foot in some of the changes from NS1 to NS2, and those who haven't played it, recognize immediately, that commanding is a big deal. ("You! Get in there!" - "This is my second time playing!! Nononononono~ *Panic Attack!!*")

On top of that, Commander Help actually did help. Seeing the suggested structures in the middle of the map made me thing "Maybe I should get on that second spur" or "Right! Phase Tech still exists! The Obs!!" I only returned to the options to disable it because I felt the point where the icons got in the way. "No, I didn't want a Shift Hive off the bat. Well, we'll see how this goes anyway."

Disable the helper stuff in your settings and commanding will be 90% less painful!

Other then that, just watchout you don't hit hotkeys by accident
