Simple idea. The three hive restriction is silly IMO. How about at two hives, the commander then can research the ability to drop Onos eggs.
Explanation:
Comm drops 2nd hive
2nd hive is built
Comm researches Onos eggs (for sake of argument, costs 30 res and takes 60 seconds)
Comm can then drop Onos eggs at same price as usual.
Yes? No?

So onos would be 6 mins instead of 5 mins.... cool story bro.
No, this solution works well for now.
Lets see how it goes for a few patches buffing the mid game life forms before we bring back lolnos spam before the 10 min mark plox.
Aliens are still perfectly capable of fielding onos in 10-15m via pres.
As someone else pointed out on the forums, if you're playing a game, and it's a stalemate (2 Hives VS 2 CC's), then it gets pretty unbalanced, as Marines have access to all their tech, while aliens don't.
It's not much of a strategic choice as evidenced by the exclusive use of tres onos in medium-high skill games and frequent abuse of tres onos in low skilled pubs. The removal of the ability to get fast onos has actually greatly opened up the alien tech tree sooner in the game. Now you have the option of going for upgrades, deciding between abilities (blink vs bilebomb vs gas), dropping a fade/lerk egg, or building support structures (crags/shifts). Previously your options were always just onos/leap -> upgrades.

Aliens absolutely have full access to their lifeforms, but obviously not their hive 3 abilities. You can still go pres onos regardless of hive count. The only difference this change does is a) eliminates early game onos (6-10m) and b) eliminates midgame onos spam (1/3 of your team onos at 10-15m). Both good changes.

your only loosing the ability to drop an onos egg, not transform into an onos.
Double Barrel Exo suit can only be bought by marines anyway. It can't be dropped. Its still balanced
If you need to research the ability to drop Onos eggs, then you need to research the ability to drop Fade, Lerk and Gorge eggs.
Agreed.Although we should not forget that it is temporary solution,so I'm sure that we need a good brainstorm on this subject.
Yes. Of course. Just because it wasn't verbalized does not mean I don't agree.
