<div class="IPBDescription">can it be done with mapping alone?</div> A little idea for a map I had while daydreaming about NS and brainstorming what to do with my map.
(crappy story outline) A small group of marines is marooned on some large research vessle overrun with aliens. The vessel contains data vital to the TSA for whatever reason. The alien threat is too great to for the marines to try and defeat and so the ship must be destroyed. The marines must try and find parts around the ship to repair a small research computer located in thier base and then extract the data. Once the data has been located the marines must move across the shipwith the data to the only working escape pod. However, the commander must stay behind to assist his troops, and then activate the ships auto destruct once the marins have launched.
(crappy map outline)The map would be broken into 3 portions. Fairly small Marine stronghold, Fairly large Alien stronhold and the the bulk of the map is the middle ground. Corridoors, halways etc that neither team should really dominate. Marines will never need to venture into or through the Alien Stronghold to complete objectives. Both teams start off with large "resource farms" nestled safely within thier own bases allowing both teams to "tech up" very quickly. Expansion is not an objective on this map, as there are no resource nodes in the middle ground. Aliens start off with 1 hive built and easy access to the other 2. Only 1 hive is accesible enough to be vunerable to a marine take over. The other 2 are well protected and out of siege range in the alien stronghold so marines can never fully supress alien evolution etc.
Marines and aliens will almost imediatly have full resources and have a constant stream the entire game,(basically both sides will have infinite resources) so both teams should have heavily fortified strongholds within minutes and be able to begin upgrading. Marines will have a new structure(research computer) that will need to be "powered up". Powering up will take time like research does for normal structures.
Once the Computer is activated it will give a error saying it needs a part to function properly and will give an waypoint to a random location on the ship to the part needed. Shortly there after the waypoint will be visible with the alien hive site and aliens will try to prevent the marines from obtaining it(only marines can posses the object) the object is visible by hive site/waypoint even as it is carried by a marine and or dropped. The object will take the slot of HMG/Nade launcher so the marine that carries the object will only have a pistol or knife to defend himself.
The computer will repeat the "error process" 2-3 more times (with different parts/objects needed and in different places) until the marines can retrieve the data. The data is then saved on a disk that 1 marine must carry to the escape pod. just like before the disk will apear on Hive site/way point. Once the marine with the disk gets to into the pod the disk is safe and disapears from HS/radar even if the marine dies. Only 1 marine needs to get in and launch the pod before the commander can start the self destruct sequence. Although a good commander will be sure his whole team gets out alive <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I doubt it can be done without some new code but still. whadya think.

I know the dev team mentioned Marine vs Marine and Alien vs Alien to be implemented in a later version.
What other plausible game modes could be fun in NS besides Expand/Upgrade/Kill that can be taken seriously?
What are some less serious ones that are fun? I like to call my idea scavenger escape...um yeah...
BTW if you know of any gameplay mode posts could you please link me to em?
i like the latter part of your idea (the object retrieving). but sitting through the level-up part every time at the beginning... nah, rather not.
let's forget the whole turtling part and stay low-tech the whole game. LMGs vs Skulks are much more interesting than corner-strafing acid-rocketing Fades anyway.
such a mode would be really intense... right now you seldom have this "Alien" feeling... alone and vulnerable on an infested ship.
of course you'd need invulnerable spawn points and a time limit. aliens win when marines fail to retrieve the objects in time.
i'd like this a lot more than Aliens vs Aliens. of course it won't happen, it's not RTSish after all, but who says we can't dream. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
