Do whips hurt?

Look at the whip, and the way it hits people. It looks kind of like a huge finger. Try coiling up your finger and hitting stuff with it. Try to destroy something with your "whip finger", like a pill bottle or an eraser. I imagine that's what a whip is like. Or maybe it stings like a wet towel snapping in the gym showers.
Or you know how the whip stretches really far when it whips? Maybe that's like Dhalsim from Street Fighter, y'know the Indian guy with the really stretchy limbs. I can see it now... Marines are getting KO'd by these whips... but you wouldn't die from that. You'd have to shoot your own teammate to get him to respawn, cause that would be faster than getting him to wake up from being knocked out.
I know I'm not alone when my first reaction to the Whip structure was... "wait what?"
How about you?

Imagine it as an arm instead and you're getting repeatedly hit in the face by a very strong fighter...
Ohh, so the best tactic is to get really close to the whip and just hug him to soften the blows?

Mass and momentum.
The whip looks fairly thick and chucky up until the tip. Depending on how much momentum it can produce the more hurtful the strike. IaFrom what I can remember of the whip animation i dont think it is just the tip that looks like it would hit you (could be wrong)
Your comparison of a finger seems a bit off. Maybe if your finger was the size of a whip and you could hit people with it at phenominal speed it woul do more damage.
"Play the game and enjoy."
I don't think you were playing the game when you wrote this. I do enjoy NS2. I marvel its production. I am not complaining, I'm simply wondering if others feel the same way. You're like one of those guys that complain when a cop pulls someone over for driving 5 miles over the speed limit, and saying cops should only be arresting drug dealers and bank robbers.
How the hell did you manage to extract all that nonsense from my statement?
Maybe I am confused about the purpose of this thread, are you complaining about the animation of the whip or are just saying it is strange?
I am simply saying, the game is full of amazing ideas and concepts, I think the whip is great, yes it is a bit weird the animation for it, but isnt that part of it?
OK ill go about this another way, what do you think it should look like. TO ME It looks like they designed a grenade hitback device FIRST, then thought it might work with melee attacks too, as I reckon the animation and design is perfect for grenade whipping.
I don't quite understand, but this sounds interesting. Care to elaborate?
The way the things in game are named for aliens are composed as though it was a name that got passed around the marines themselves and eventually ended up being the formal name for it. Onos are named Onos because that was the reaction for typical marines who first saw them "Oh no" hence "Oh-nos" or Onos. Gorges, skulks, lerks, and fades are more direct to their actions. Hydras for example are named hydras because they are made up of 3 tentacles, and usually guard something that aliens defend such as hives, and are typically placed around doorways; so hydras are what marines have to get by to get into a "hell" that you could call the hive, and are made up of 3 tentacles as I said before, hence their name as hydra. Marines called whips "whips" only for the fact that they are coiled like a whip, and roll out in a motion similar to what someone might initially conceive as a whip; therefore they were called whips not for the actual exact similarities to real whips or whipping motions but for the marines canon perception of them. They also whip grenades back from where they came from, and no other name makes sense.
So everything for the aliens the marines themselves made up names for, because they have no official name. What else would you call a whip when you were a new player if you had to give them a name? That's what the names were centered around. "Visuals suggest function", and names are somewhat a part of visuals.
Life form OU-812 doesn't have the same 'ring' =P
Don't actually flick a cockroach though... that's pretty gross. Unless you enjoy squished roach remains on your finger.
Hahahaha. That's actually a far better analogy than what I came up with.
His small ass whip is able to hurt people badly (Hello, old testament or present day Iran).
Now think of this Whip slightly(about 500x) larger and not swung by an alcoholic movie star but by a highly mutated specialized Alien muscle whose singular purpose of existence is to swing itself as hard as possible at stinky marines.
I think requires not too much imagination to see why it hurts to be hit by a whip.
Actually thinking about, the damage should be considerably higher
if you ask me whips should be bound to second hive, whips are just WASTE of resources in first hive and is basicly noob trap for new khammanders giving them false idea of defend, while whips are mostly for defend yes, they are useless in earlygame. and i see red anytime someone makes those.
like some new marine once said... "WATCH OUT, THERE'S A HUGE PENIS"
edit : marine robotic's factory should be bound to second command chair also because this is just as noob trap as whips.
Just lol.

An Iguana can get 6 feet long and it's tail is capable of breaking your arm when it reaches this size.
I think the whip could hurt you...

Welcome to Pre-Steam (early 2012) and ns2_rockdown, before the huge interface overhaul :P
I actually preferred the percentage indicator instead of these huge tooltips that show bars of HP/AP
I once stacked i think 4k dmg counter on an RT via lerk spikes, with bile bomb it took about 2k to go down.... (not exact numbers)
When i drop 200dmg counter on a skulk, i know they have cara but still wonder wtf just happened.
I'd imagine the Whip is similar in that regard...it's Hugh's man tongue coming to get you.
