[WIP: Model/Animation] NS1 Knife
<div class="IPBDescription">Just needs a skin!</div>Hey all, been a few weeks since I brought anything new to the table, but as mentioned in my other thread I've been busy with work-related stuff, in fact, I'm at work as I type to you now through the holiday season. Alas, I have brought some form of update at last!
This guy now deserves it's own thread, as it nears completion:
<img src="http://ice.annihilation.info/NS2/NS1Knife05.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://ice.annihilation.info/NS2/NS1Knife07.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
I modeled a nice modernized version of the original Natural Selection knife, for anyone needing a dose of nostalgia. Then I baked some pretty normal maps onto the low poly mesh, and then I made a brand new custom animation rig for NS2's marine arms. Then I started to reanimate the knife.
Today I essentially finished reanimating the knife, admittedly I had accomplished %90 of this task prior to leaving out on this mission, and only just now got the opportunity to work on it again. It is complete with all currently utilized animations ingame: idle, TWO draw/equips, walk/run, sprint, two attack combo, jump/fall, land, and flinch/gore. I made two draw animations because I like variety, depending on which is more popular I may compile the model with one or the other for the final publification. I also intend to make an alternate set of attack animations as well, but right now I just made some boring plain left-right hack/slash attacks for the sake of completion.
Now to the point of this thread: The only thing holding back the completion of this knife is a new skin! I have created normal maps, AND ambient occlusion bakes from the high poly mesh for this knife, it just needs base texture and color (Albedo/diffuse) and a specular map made to match!
Working from my laptop with no wacom or stylus greatly hinders my ability to finish this myself, and I was never a huge fan of texturing anyway, and could use a hand producing a quality skin for it.
This is an excellent chance to get in on a nearly completed collaboration, and be a part of the first fully custom and community-created model and animation replacement for NS2. I'm severely limited on bandwidth and internet speed right now in my current 'remote' location, so forgive the lack of previews or animation video upload, but you are very unlikely to be disappointed with any of the work completed so far if you want to try your hand at skinning the knife!
Here are some fun links if you want to help me out:
Compiled Knife on new animations with placeholder skins:

Knife model UVW maps in PSD format with AO layer:
<a href="http://ice.annihilation.info/NS2/NS1Knife_UVW.rar" target="_blank">http://ice.annihilation.info/NS2/NS1Knife_UVW.rar</a>
I don't remember what I put in this, but it probably has something relevant in it!:
<a href="http://ice.annihilation.info/NS2/NS1KnifeStuff.rar" target="_blank">http://ice.annihilation.info/NS2/NS1KnifeStuff.rar</a>
Once completed this will of course be permitted for other mods usage pending proper credit is granted to the original authors. Seems like it would be a fair fit for the NS Classic mod, and maybe others that want more weapon variety.
Stay tuned for more slow updates, and I will get back to the Revolver soon!

Massive thanks cannot even begin to express my appreciation for the wonderful surprise I just received from EZJamin, a fellow ex-NS modder from years long past!
Unfortunately my FTP is giving me issues at this time, so imgur will have to make do with some quick previews while I sort out the steam workshop publishing issue I'm having from my laptop.

It was like opening my only christmas gift this year to get this in a PM! It's spot-on perfect with what I would have wanted to make myself, and better still it's of higher quality than what I could have come up wth!
Look forward to a new fully custom axe replacement soon!
I cannot figure this out for the life of me, but when hosting my own listen server, or utilizing training, it will not allow me to enable this mod, as it fails consistency checks. I even attempted to rename the files to match the old axe_view naming convention to no avail! Anyone have any clue on why a simple clientside cosmetic view model replacement would be causing some drastic consistency failure?
There aren't really any exploits that come to mind by replacing a simple melee weapon, and what is stranger still is that my SMG hack passes consistency fine! The model file is new on the SMG, but reuses the base textures, so am I to believe that a new texture file is more cause for a potential exploit than a new model? I'm frustrated and baffled! What the hell UWA?
[EDIT]
I can, however, occasionally join a modded server and it will pass consistency... so I can't pass my own internal consistency check but I can pass some online servers consistency? The console consistency reporting is wonky right now, and it doesn't always report what failed, why it failed or anything reliable. In fact, only once did it mention that the mod failed because of axe_view.material failing consistency, which was during a test where I renamed all of the knife textures to match the pre-existing axe textures just in case... no luck...
What is going on here?!
So whatever... until consistency checking makes more sense, here is the very first public release version of the knife!

Nice work on this. :D
And then also duplicate the axe_view.model file with all the other names:
axe_view_assault.model
axe_view_deluxe.model
axe_view_eliteassault.model
axe_view_special.model
female_axe_view.model
female_axe_view_assault.model
female_axe_view_deluxe.model
female_axe_view_eliteassault.model
female_axe_view_special.model
edit:
Oh, last post was January last year. Well, mod seems broken now too due to the above.
