Unfortunately the actual in-game models/skins don't look anywhere near that good. That looks like it has bump-mapping, which I don't think HL even supports.

Actually, I think it is blushing, I could be wrong. Maybe it just needs a hug. I love how the aliens look, the Gorge is a bit too bulbous for my tastes, but yes, even I, an insensitive male chauvinist pig (to be politically correct) concede that is is cute and cuddly.

WHAT?! you didn't want to make the aliens look scary and evil?! HA! ok you failed miserably then, but i'm sure glad you did.

You're right, the in game models don't look quite that good in game, but it's only due to way models are lit. That was a 3d Studio Max rendering, and there was no bump mapping or any other fancy effects used. If you see the texture, all those shadows and details are all painted into the map. The only difference between that model shot and the model in game was that Max handles lighting better. Player model (and view model) lighting is, unfortunately, one of the biggest visual drawback's to the old HL engine.

And the the red you see is not blood, but rather some tint from a red spotlight that was placed in the scene, to give it a bit of an evil look (yes, we decided it would be okay to go a little more "evil" with the design of the look for the Fade).

Hey wait a second...how could we be ripping off Mother Nature when we're already ripping off every other game?

- We're ripping off Gloom (our aliens are pratically identical, apparently)
- We're ripping off Starcraft (zergling = skulk, drone = gorge, muta = lerk, hydra = fade, ultra = onos)
- We're ripping off Aliens (I mean, isn't NS just an Aliens/AvP clone?)
- We're ripping off Starship Troopers (I have no idea)
- Now, we're ripping off Mother Nature

I'm not sure how one game can manage to be exactly like so many other things, but it sure is an exact copy of all those! Obviously, NS is just one giant ripoff!

Sorry, I couldn't resist...I feel better now.

On second thought, I've decided my previous post was nothing more than delusional rantings, therefore:
Life copies itself--Look in your body, and watch the cells copy.
Games copy themselves: Look at all the HL clones that sprang up.
As was previously posted, certain traits fit an environment better, and thusly, become dominant--thusly the look of the aliens. Its all a part of natural selection and such stuff. Wait, thats the name of the mod....Well, crap, Flayra, you gotta add in the bit about NS copying science too, since it so blatantly rips off a fundamental of biology.

That said, you've done a really bad job of ripping off AvP. Sure you got the Aliens and the USCM right... but you forgot the most important part. What kind of shoddy hack job is it that forgets the Predator?

Shame on you Flayra. I expect this to be rectified in 1.03.

So.. uh at what point would a animal, decide to evole so it could have acid shooting abilities?..
• FieariFieari Join Date: 2002-10-22 Member: 1566Members, Constellation
It's theorized that the Fade didn't actually evolve acid shooting capabilities. Instead, it formed a symbiosis with a worm like creature that burrows into its shoulder feeding off it. In return, the symbiot can eject acid rockets and bile bombs on command.... it might not even be on command, more like the fade damages it in some way, causing it to explosivly bleed, and the energy expenditure is to heal the symbiot so it can be damaged again. But no one knows for absolute certain.

LOL! And to think, of all the things that have been done in the ready room to the poor gorges by the evil marines....
• Crazed-OneCrazed-One Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7027Members
I probably should have left it alone but, there was were these neighbors down the road from us and they raised pigs, and we used to build these box forts in the pig fenced area with the pigs all locked inside. When we were all done we would crawl inside our box fort and the 3rd person would let the pigs out. The pigs would decimate our fort and we used to jump on their backs and see how long we could stay on them, like bull riding ussually getting tossed in the mud. Hey we were like 8 yrs old, and it was fun, just like going in the barn and throwing rocks at hornets nests and see who whimped out and ran first.

Its just that they all look like deformed animals. the Ono looks like a rhino, the gorge looks like a pig, the flying thing looks like a bat, the fade looks like a giant praying mantis. the alien models are pretty much perfect, except i think the skulk should be a little smaller cos sometimes their legs pop out from behind walls but apart from that they do their job.

ask yourself this : 'when playing as a marine, does seeing an onos come screaming round the corner make you sh!t your pants? The solution is obvious: only make models that have 3, 5 (well, that exists), 7, 9,... legs

Ummm actually Aliens dont take on the shape of thier hosts...

There are various alien types; runner drones (smaller reddish colored), normal drones (the normal black ones), preatorians (small queens), the Queen.

Then there are the genetic hybrid pred-aliens, created in labs.

Bull the alien type doesnt alter depending on the host; just the type of facehugger in the egg.
• DoombringerDoombringer Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8679Members, Constellation
Actually Kujo, I think you're wrong. The runner drones were only created in Alien 3, when the facehugger snagged a rottweiler. The Predaliens in the games (and the comic books, I believe) are the result of a face-hugged Predator. I think there are other examples of this.. like the infamous "Pilot" debate in Alien.

Well, maybe not a debate, but some speculation over the shot of a dead alien (with a hole in its stomach) sitting in a sort of pilot's chair in the space ship in the movie 'Alien'. The "pilot" is similar to the existing aliens, but not entirely. I saw the shot in a HR Giger book once, it was pretty cool
