"Night" vision

Hello everyone , been working on a mod lately. But im having some troubles.

Basically i want to re-rig the alien dark vision too only lighten the area and not show any other effects , just make darkness a tad more see-able.

I'm stumped here so any ideas would be great?.

I would imagine you would have to do one of two things: a) do some fancy maths to make shadows become lit areas. Or b) smooth all lighting out to the same level with a set number.
