Just an interesting topic I think; Nintendo has put up a copyright claim on youtube for all of their products.

As part of our on-going push to ensure Nintendo content is shared across social media channels in an appropriate and safe way, we became a YouTube partner and as such in February 2013 we registered our copyright content in the YouTube database. For most fan videos this will not result in any changes, however, for those videos featuring Nintendo-owned content, such as images or audio of a certain length, adverts will now appear at the beginning, next to or at the end of the clips. We continually want our fans to enjoy sharing Nintendo content on YouTube, and that is why, unlike other entertainment companies, we have chosen not to block people using our intellectual property.

Not sure how long "a certain length" is. Could be 10 minutes, could be 10 seconds. Sure they aren't directly shutting down channels such as SEGA did with the whole Shining Force fiasco, but the outcome is the same. Many people who made a living recording videos on Nintendo products may now have to severely change their channel or find themselves out of a job.

Not trying to paint Nintendo as some evil corporation out to shit on their fans out of spite; They DO own the content after all. But I also still think it's a dick move to suddenly spring this on people.

Still if it is used for review/educational/instructional/tutorial video material, they are protected under fair use when using copyrighted content. However let's play's, which is probably most of the Nintendo content on YouTube, are in more shady parts of the territory, in terms of using the copyrighted material. Especially if it's just some people mucking about for entertainment purposes, not teaching the viewer anything (tutorials). Let's plays that are a playthrough of a game however, with commentary are kinda like tutorials right, see the shady part :P

And unless you have written permission or an online licence (ie: Minecraft), they can potentially claim the content and shut down any earnings you get from those, even if it passes YouTube's "needs commentary alongside the copyrighted video/audio content for monetisation" rule. However being part of a bigger gaming network like Machinima, TGS, TNG, SocialBlade, will probably protect you from this...

Also what Sega's employee did (it was an intern, if I recall correctly), was just flagging anything for sake of flagging it as Sega content. Even the legit reviews and such, which goes against the fair use of copyrighted material.

According to Machinima, copyright claims from Nintendo has been on the rise. Apparently Nintendo is overriding these conglomerates.

Unfortunately the content ID match may also be flagging reviews, trailers and news articles, although to be fair I've yet to see an example of that. Regardless, since getting enough Content ID matches on your account can hinder your partnership with Youtube nobody wants to risk touching this stuff.
