    b) Better ways of getting newbies into games where they won't be stomped by try-harding vets but WILL be helped by vets taking team-leading roles (commanding, field commanding, patiently answering questions, etc). Perhaps Sabot will help here?

I just had an idea: rookie only servers where veterans are only allowed to join as coaches, to help the rookies with tips, instructions on how to play, strategies and stuff. Coaches are like spectators with a different name; they have to pick one team and get access to that team's chat and voice channels. Restrict coach spectating to first-person and comm view only, without allowing them to see the rest of the map like normal spec does, and it's going to be awesome.

Also - Don't relaunch until you give server operators a way to have reserved slots which don't show up as publicly available slots in the server browser.

Otherwise, newbies will spend their first few games trying to connect to servers which LOOK like they have open slots, but which kick them as soon as they join.

    The newbies will then quit.

it was very discouraging. I still avoid those servers, and maybe one or two that aren't reserved slot because I may have been confused

TF2 introduced a very cool Coaching mode. You can choose a person, send them a request to coach them, and if they accept it allows you to spectate and communicate with only them. Things like "Move here, look here, attack here, build this, check your corners". If he has a question, he can ask his coach directly and expect a quick answer because, you know, that's the coach's whole purpose. he should be willing to answer any questions and give tips. edit: Some type of 1-on-1 VOIP option would be amazing as well.
