Just a poll for funsies since it is just around the corner and the important features in the BT mod are finally on lock down for now. So as the mod is in its current state how do you feel it will impact the game's remaining population?

*URL Snipped* Users posted antisemetic comments about a prominent UWE volunteer there. Although this is not a direct action taken by the poster of this message, I cannot leave such an offensive link up.

These were the results:

POLL: How do you feel BT mod will affect NS2's population?

Selection Votes
Increase the playerbase 42% 26
Status quo no change. 24% 15
Decrease the playerbase 34% 21

Just my thoughts, but the wording on the options in that poll leave much to be desired.

Well technically it will do both. First there will be a momentary spike, similar to when gorgeous released, then the trial period will wear off and the population will end up lower than before the patch, just like with gorgeous. I think that both the spike and the decline will be noticeably sharper than gorgeous, at least when scaled to current playercounts.

I also believe that a multiplayer game requires a certain "critical mass" of players to keep it going, and I think we are already very, very close to falling below that lower limit. I think that the new patch will, when the new wears off, bring us to that point.

The only people to return are the ones who are still watching NS2 closely enough, waiting for something to happen to reignite their interest in the game, such as the BT patch, or those that had their friends tell them to give it a try again. Once the new patch smell wears off, these same people will part ways once again with a small percentage actually staying around.

You don't patch a game to get people to come back, you patch a game to keep the currently players around. Which is where this patch can shine or fail utterly. Too much of a change will just make players not want to relearn everything and give it up entirely.

This game hit critical mass a month or two after the patch. Not as if we didn't see it coming.

I think when they release BT they should also do another free steam weekend. Seems the player base in Australia has been going down over the last few months. I'm only guessing it is the same globally? In Australia, there are only ever 2-3 full servers in prime time which is very disappointing.

I think this next update will make players leave and will also make existing players come back to check it out. So it should all even out.

Well on the east coast we are still holding on a bit. It's nearly 12am so it is okay for the time. In the day during prime time it is usually better but it is SUBSTANTIALLY less than before where the server list was far longer.

Idk about the player count though. There are always some players that do not want to relearn everything or prefer vanilla that will take off but some might be interested by the new techniques. Guess we will find out a few weeks after the BT mod when the dust has settled.

I'm going to.wait and see how thegame plays in bt, from my 4 or 5 times on it though, I probably won't stick around, and im the kind of player that played enemy territory well into it's grave. I weathered it's friendly fire to no friendly fire conversion... and a host of other storms. im the kind of player that plays ns2 even though im forced into ungodly resolutions where I couldn't see res counts on the scoreboard, they finally fixed that by the way, or my res spontaneously changd again. mainly, im not sure if im willing to relearn the intracacies of this game again, and they will probably Nerf the hell out of my favorite lifeform, the lerk. I put the odds at 1:3 that I'll stick around after 250. im probably not representative of the pop, but there it is.

You are a good person :p

Seriously, after the BT update NS2 will be an overall better game.
But I can understand people can finally get irritated when something they like and that worked isn't improved, but instead replaced by something quite different.

Aww man I loved that game and the classes. I wish there was another like it. I can't remember exactly why I quit though. Part of me remembers that it had something to do with hackers driving me insane.

I don't think it will make players leave. We are coming up to steam sale time so playercount should be going up no matter what.

If they released BT with a 50% sale/free weekend or whatever, that would be very very smart.

If they just released BT without doing that, that would be pretty dumb. I have high hopes for BT!

Well, looking at the pub server response today, I don't think we will have servers to play on by monday. People absolutely HATE the patch, primarily because they see it as extremely imbalanced in favor of marines. I'd like to point out that most of the complaints I'm seeing have little to do with alien movement, it's mostly just people saying marines are OP over and over again.

I'm going to take a guess and say that this is because alien khams don't know what they're doing and thus lose the game for their team.

More likely because people can't skulk or fade and mostly probably don't even realise that you're supposed to chain jumps together to maintain speed. I don't even remember it being mentioned in the official changelog in spite of being by far the most important change in terms of actual gameplay. I hadn't imagined that they would just release the patch with the scrappy (and in places, erroneous) notes from the test log.

This is like resetting a player's MMO character. Some people will enjoy a fresh start, others will drop the game.

edit: The largest change that most people will notice straight away is player movement. Other changes to tech were essential, but player movement makes it feel like a different game.

Unless they added a time machine with the patch the game has been history for ages.

And just like gorgeous, the player count went up during the sale/free weekend or whatever it was (who would have thunk), then tanked 15%-20% shortly after the new patch smell wore off.

The same thing will happen with this patch.

I have not once encountered someone complaining about marines being OP. In fact aliens have won most of the games I've played. However I have been alien comm in a good percentage of the games I have played (want to make it easier for new players so I comm and help them out). So it could be like ghost was suggesting, that a number of players don't know how to use the new alien comm and as a result hurt their team.

In the games I've played so far I have seen a lot more marine comebacks and games are lasting much longer.

gotta wait till newbie weekend is over to gauge. I've been going 20:1 when I haven't been tinkering with comming, and haven't lost a game comming yet... and that's really only from doing what an average veteran should be doing, like building res and encouraging harass and med drops. give it time.
