It sounds to me like everyone is intentionally ignoring the OP's primary comment: He's looking for immersive gameplay and he isn't finding it in NS2. Immersion was eventually removed from NS1 and never really made it into NS2.
The days of marines turtling their way through a map while their scouts were taken out by sneaky skulks are gone.
Having the sense that you're trapped in space with a legion of aliens hiding around every corner isn't there.
NS and Combat have been gradually merging. Some like this, some don't. Clearly the ones who like it are either on the dev team or have been able to influence them.
Personally, I was drawn to this game by the immersion. I miss it greatly but stick around because I enjoy the teamwork aspects. Yes, it's still fun for me but if there was a way to bring back that grander sense of interstellar warfare, in standard NS2 or in a mod, I'd be all for it.
