<div class="IPBDescription">Yup, that VENT!</div> For a while I thought that if there were Lerks up on the vent, it was because the commander never saw to it that it was closed. Come to find out, weld it or not, you cannot deny use of that vent to Lerks unless you detail a trooper for vent duty, which is a waste of manpower.
Last night I was truly impressed by the tenacity of the Alien team in using the vent. I was playing Marine, and all knew how anoying it is to have a Lerk up there, so we set off to deny it to the Khaara. Armed with a pack of mines and a welder we set off. We got to the Vestibule and the mine carrier jumped inside, while another trooper welded the vent shut. The the Marine with the mines put 5 mines up there, then droped into base and put 5 more on the wall up to the vent. Done deal we all thought...NOT!
While we all cackled with glee at the thought of Lerks finding the vent closed, we soon started to see Skulks rushing through the base and detonating the mines on the wall, then the ones up above, then there were no more. It must have cost them 5-10 Skulks to finaly get through the turrets and detonate all the mines, but they did. And Soon we saw a Skulk run through the base, up the wall, and heard the chuckle followed by the morphing sound that heralded the birth of a new Lerk.
I will never again underestimate the efectiveness of a single Lerk up there. Every Marine that respawned, including myself, just HAD to get some shots up there. Of course, you have to turn your back to the base entrance to do so, and we sufered many casualties from Skulks and Fades that would pop in and catch people looking up the vent.
Without spore cloud, no Lerk can hope to do much damage from that perch, but the effect to the Marine morale is tremendous!!
I know you're thinking "Bah! n00b Marines! just use a GL!" or "Bah! frigging n00bs! get up there with a jet pack already!" Well, we did both... and shortly after we'd see a Skulk run up the wall, and chuckle as he morphed. We killed many, many of them as they attempted to get up there, and even more in the vent itself, but they just kept on coming. I cannot tell you the amount of energy, and resources that were spent trying to nulify that threat. Even though we all knew, down to a man, that we were dancing to the Khaara's tune, we could not stop from doing it! It's like trying not to rubber-neck as you drive by a car wreck. It has to be the most evil, devious & disruptive thing I've ever seen done. Good for you Khaara!! My hat's off to you.
The only way that I can think of doing away with this anoyance for good, is to move the base proper to the 1st hive site you secure. But then again, I've always advocated relocating the base to a hive site (I'll never have an Ohno rushing my base).
Do any of you have an effective way of dealing with this problem? If so, please post.

Once you kill a player in egg form a few times (ESPECIALLY if they always do it in the same place); they'll get discouraged from being pests...at least from that one position.
You even made a tower of people to try to get inside lol.
Oh god, if that is what NS is like on public servers..

IF I CAN'T SEE IT IT DOESN'T EXIST D:
Assassin, don't even get me started on Bast! I hate that map when playing marines. Between that elevator, the vent and the airlock, base defence can be quite a headache. Luckily, Bast has 2 hives practically next to the Marine start, and you stand a good chance of getting both before the Aliens are done rushing. God help you if you don't. hehe!
i said it a few times in the beginning that we should close the vent ASAP, but the commander didn't listen so it came new aliens all the time that either parasited us or killed us.. and a while after when they got fades they attacked us from the main entrance and someone was in the vent killing us from behind.. god i hated the commander becaus of that since we couldn't shut the vent becaus we couldn't come to it.
the next game we place a turret below it that killed the aliens.. atleast held them away more then before untill we got to shut it.
One game i was playing with some regs on this server im always on and i look up and its 5 on 1.... im like wth! and i tell em to even it and this dude i know just says "why dont you rush and win" and they all laugh. Then about 4 seconds later my name pops up infront of 4 death sprites.
Oh man we had a good laugh over that, but they comm got me, didnt hear him exit as i killed IP. But that was fun. Ive never been so detirmed tho that if its sealed i just leave it, go fade, and bombard front if i want there spawn. Lerk coverage is da best.
