Natural Selection 2 game won't work after starting

game won't work after starting, it will bring you to the main menu but after you click one thing in main menu like play ,it won't do any thing else and your stuck you can't go back to the main menu or see any games to play or play at all or exit the game. But the games back ground or the game it self is not frozen. this has happen before when I did free to play for this title.

Possibly a mod. Press your ~ button to open the console, if there's a whole heap of error messages then there's something breaking lua.

to further elaborate, the way to remove mods from outside the game is to delete the workshop folder in %appdata%/Natural Selection 2/ that should take care of things.

if for some horrible reason it does not you should try the nuke it from orbit option: remove ns2, delete the folder from steam/steamapps/common and the %appdata%/Natural Selection 2/ folder and then reinstall.
