Upscaling windowed mode?

Is there anyway to upscale windowed mode without going fullscreen? I have to play at a lower resolution due to performance issues, but upscaling 1280x720 (16:9) on a 25" monitor with a 1920x1200 (16:10) native res looks pretty bad in full screen. What I essentially want to do is upscale 1280x720 to 1920x1080 in windowed mode so I maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio and not force the image to be stretched so much.

I'm confused, windowed mode shouldn't stretch the game at all?

    What?

I'm just looking for a simple function to reisze a window in windowed mode. I've checked the .xml file, but no option exists.

It's so confusing, you're asking to stretch it to fit your screen better without stretching it making it look bad? You can't magically make it bigger and not lose quality, that's called increased resolution which you said you can't do.

It is possible with AMD Catalyst Control Centre, there is an option called GPU scaling which I think might be what you are looking for. Alternatively if you want to play in 1280 x 720 windowed then you can change your desktop resolution to the same as the game resolution and it will be full screen. Hope this is what you mean.

EDIT: I just re-read, I am not sure about the aspect ratio change, but GPU scaling should work. Why are you playing on a different aspect ratio you your native?

He wants to render the 3D scene at a lower resolution than the actual resolution of the window while maintaining his original desktop resolution. ARMA does this, as do some other games.
Basically you can have your viewport and interface rendered at, for example, 1080p, but keep actual 3d graphics rendered at 720p but upscaled to 1080p, making the game run faster and look blockier.

As far as I know, however, NS2 does not support this.

That said, lower 3d resolution will give you a great disadvantage. I would rather lower the detail than the resolution, because higher resolutions let you spot (and therefore shoot) targets from a greater distance. As a marine, close combat should be avoided whenever possible.

IMO what he wants to do is to upscale the lower resolution game video output while maintaining the aspect ratio, which makes sense. Besides chosing a proper 16:10 resolution like 1680:1050, you can tell your drivers to do GPU scaling instead of inbuilt monitor scaling, and configure the scaling to maintain aspect ratio.

Here is a guide for ATI:

    For NVIDIA:

BTW while certain applications like dosbox allow you to use filter like supersai or hq2x to scale a window, gfx card drivers do not offer this option (it makes little sense for NS2 too).

Exactly this, but I think you meant to say "look less blockier".

I've already lowered all my settings and I still got bad drops at higher resolutions. The game runs good at the start, but as the game progresses it gets really bad. I always jump to conclusions that my performance is fixed, but am disappointed as the game goes on and combat gets heavy and more structures are built.

Hell, even at 720p on all low settings I still drop FPS late in game! It's nowhere near as bad as the higher resolutions, but it still does happen. This is on a i5 2500k/560ti mind you.
