Hey guys,
I decided to post this because it took me quite some time to find the solution for this problem, and i didnt find a post about this specific problem of mine
What happened!
After the last update, the game did freeze at the server-page and/or when i ran the performance-run after the update, the game got stuck at "Starting local game"
I couldnt close the game. Not even killing the process through the task manager would help (even if the sound stopped at this point)
What you maybe tried so far (without success)!
Disabling the Firewall
Deleting the NS2 folder at %appdata%
Running a game integrity check
Reinstalling the game
Joining a server through a 3rd application (online server-browser on web)
What caused the problem!
This seems to be a "common" problem with ESET´s firewall/AV
ESET seems to have some problems when an application got modified (i.e. ESET v 4-5 when league of legends got updated)
This happens when you use the "interactive filter"
Usually ESET "asks" you to allow/block the "new" connection established by the updated NS2
It seems to be unaffected by the gamermode, I tried it running the game windowed; the message box of ESET just doesnt appear
So what can I do to solve this problem!
What worked for me was quite simple (once you know it)
I added the NS2.exe to the exclusion list of what application will be checked on modification
And how can i add it to the exclusion list using ESET!
First of all, some options in your ESET might be called different, im not using an english version, so i translated it (please google for further information about how to configure ESET)
Go to Advanced Settings -> Network Personal Firewall -> Recognize application modification -> Hit Add and browse to (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\natural selection 2\ and choose the NS2.exe
Thats it, ESET will no longer moan about NS2 being modificated after an update and wont block the connections anymore
This might help some peeps with the same problem, maybe even using different firewalls/AV´s
Positive feedback with Norton (exact version unknown)
EDIT: Off Topic
Just have to throw this inside:
As noticeable in this example, many errors may be caused by the game itself or some update, but even if it seems like it its not always the case
Even if i saw a really patient community here so far, i have to say that UNW doesnt throw in bugs and errors to annoy the shit out of us
But it happens, and pretty much in every "modern" game these days!
The programmers job is great, but can also bring (and it does) a lot of stress and pressure
This guys are working pretty hard on balancing and fixing the game - For example bringing out a second patch after a difficult previous one over the weekend quite fast
As IT-supporter for a big company with some experience, i can tell you that everyone gets the fastest help by providing as much crucial information as possible and by remaining calm... just as 'lil hint after I've seen some freakouts in the tech forum ;-)
