Game Switches to desktop during load

So, every time NS2 is loading, it keeps switching to the desktop unless I keep moving the mouse. I am running 32bit winxp without the 3gb switch as it makes my computer stop booting windows. It sort of feels like my power saving features are kicking (screen goes to sleep after 1min of inactivity under normal circumstances)in due to inactivity, but I'm not sure why ns2 loading would be considered inactivity... Let alone why it would switch to desktop instead of blanking the screen (ns2 doesn't close, it just... Gets minimized?)
I would happily run on win7 if win7 didn't hate my video card
