Tanith Weld And Gate Question

<div class="IPBDescription">some help</div> Hi guys I have 2 questions. First of all, what's the point of welding pillars? I just noticed them in tanith. It's a pillar with a weld sign on it. I understand welding vents, but a pillar? Is there anything in the pillar?

Also where can phase gates be placed? I know initially you need an observatory, but the 2nd gate needs what? I tried placing a phase gate in my forward post but I couldn't.

On Tanith when you weld that pillar (actually there's wiring running parallel to the column itself) a nifty little laser shoots down from the satellite and blows up part of the far wall, opening a small niche.

You need two phase gates in operation to use them both, Marines must leap upon the pads to transport to another Phase Gate location. Phase Gates can be placed normally as with any other non-turret building.

thanks. I found out that not being able to place 2nd phase gate was a bug... I;ve also run into the bug of not being able to upgrade the factory. Oh well they happened once each in different games....

actually it's not a niche, it's a direct passage to a hive. you can destroy one of the walls in the "niche".

The question is, what's the advantage of a more direct route to the hive for the marines?

Easier to get your troops there to stop any alien progress.

Ah, well I usually just use a phase gate.

I guess if it was a huge advantage, it would be done more often and seem quite ordinary.
