On level 2, you'll rank up and become Sergeant. You can weld and reload 10% faster, you also do 5% more damage with all weapons and receive 5% more armour.
(A cumulative effect that will be granted on every level).
On level 10, you'll rank up again and become Master Sergeant. This unlocks the Heavy Machine Gun (HMG).
That baby is flat out better than the shoddy standard LMG all the peasants use. 125 standard ammo capacity and twice the dmg to show those underachieving losers who's boss.
If you make it to level 100, a special surprise will unlock that I can't tell you about yet. You have to experience it for yourself!
Hint: Watch out for the "LEVEL UP!" genetically superior NS2 experience DLC on Steam, it grants you 10 extra levels (sic!) and gives your welder a golden finish for only $9.99!
If you look closely in a mirror (not provided ingame), you'll notice that your marine starts wearing a gold chain around the neck.
Now here comes the kicker to separate the try-hards from the true elite: If level up your "LEVEL UP!" DLC by buying it 10 times, your marine will look like this:
