Low GPU & CPU Usage

Help!

GPU (GTX 670 4GB) is at 45-65% usage

CPU (i5-3570k @4.2ghz) is at 65% usage.

FPS is 25-35 fps. On menu, gpu usage is 99% and fps is 70.

What can I do to get my GPU to get to 99%?

    Dear Stefan,

    From what you have written, it would appear you are cpu bottlenecked. NS2 runs mostly off the one core, hence the 65% usage actually meaning 100% effective usage. That is, your gpu is not being fully utilized because it is spending most of it's time waiting for your cpu to send it information.

    If you were to type r_stats into the console during any game, i would not be surprised if you had a high ms waiting on render thread.

    That being said, even with how horribly ns2 performs, 25-35 fps seems very low for your system. I would first do the following

    1) Check if something is using up your cpu resources at idle. You may just have a background process running that you forgot about.
    2) Turn off windows aero
    3) Run ns2 in fullscreen
    4) Update drivers blah blah blah etc.etc.

    Thanks for your reply.

    I might have made a mistake. I have been playing 8 v 8 online at a 99% GPU usage w/ 70fps

    However, when I said that I have 25-35 fps, that is training w/bots. 13 v 13 bots.

    Could you go into training mode, put a 13 v 13 match, and confirm that you also have framerate issues? That would put my mind at ease.

    70 fps sounds much more normal for what I would have expected from your system!

    Regarding the 13 v 13, what's happening is ns2 will simultaneously try to run the game logic for 25 bots, the server instance, as well as your client instance, which is all very cpu intensive.

    I can confirm that 13 v 13 bots decreases my normal fps by ~250%, so it seems normal for you to drop from 70's to 30's

    Perhaps better optimization would be needed for the bot mode to run at least smoothly. It is unplayable with anything over 8v8, and graphics settings do not change it.

    Anyways, thanks for calming my nerves. I have been having a bunch of game issues lately and it seems nothing wants to play well with my hardware.
