Mapster

<div class="IPBDescription">With an 'M'...</div> Has anyone else tried this? I've got 5 PC's at home here, doing the VIS for my maps... but Mapster is supposed to let other people around the world connect to me and help me with my map... now either it's brand new, or it came and went and I missed it.

Anyone?

i don't know too much about mapster but i know there's some info on:

    <a href='http://countermap.counter-strike.net/Mapster/' target='_blank'>counter map</a>

Yeah, that's where I found it. The forums are utterly dead, though, and either I'm the ONLY person running it, or I've got it setup wrongly. 5xComptuers really cuts down that VIS time, which suddenly went from 4 minutes to 30+!

Let me just reiterate what this is - dozens of computers can help you compile the VIS for your map - I think this would be an enormous help for NS, as the maps are so big!

Ehn, a well-built map should have small vis times anyway. It's the lighting that kills ya...

Yeah, I have something like 3500 solids in my map and vis takes hardly any time compared to rad, so its not really worth it to me.

My vis times are killer, but my lighting times are relatively small. Hmmm.

Well, a full VIS is about 15-20 mins and full RAD is 30 or so mins. Quick vis is about 8 seconds.

Are you actually complaining about a system to cut down on your compile time? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

a high vis compile time is better actualy, a well built map with alot of vis blocking and areas cut from eachother is good. Becuase when you can't see into one area and then from that area into another area you can easily cut down R_speeds.

You must be confused or something, lower r_speeds and well placed vis blocks speed up vis time, not slow it down.

Surely more possible vis calcs with well placed blockers mean a lot more checks?

    *scratches head*

    I don't think anyone knows <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Valve?

<---- 5-10 mins complete compile with no leaf errors

Thank god for rdram... thats all I have to say.

Anyway, VIS is down to map complexity, RAD is simply down to map surface area, and how many leafs each light can see.

So no-one has heard of Mapster then, nor got it to work? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

We looked into mapster at vlatitude, i didn't get involved with that, And I know my stuff bout the vis things, a Complex map that doesn't have alot of things sticking out and blocking view will compile slower, and then have lower R_speeds while a faster compile will not nessisarly have higher R_speeds. with a complex map that cuts it self into alot of portals it means that the portals are smaller and the vis has to calculate what you see in each portal more times so it takes longer but runs faster. I made an entire map of cave tunnels and had holes in the cavren roofs and such, it was all triangles and has an r_speed of 400 MAX with a screen full of complex and realistic brush work.

No, good VIS design means quicker calculations, which therefore translates to less compile time.

if you have 5 pcs, you can use NETVIS that comes with zoners instead of VIS - i can't tell from your post if you are doing that.

that is basicly what MAPSTER is, NETVIS over the internet. it does nto work well through firewalls though.

but if your Compile is only an hour, what is the complaint? i have had big levels compile in 4 hrs, i just let them run overnight. i have enven had some take a week or more, even with netvis. (beginner bad maps).

My compile is only an hour, yes, but with 5 PC's bulldozing it, I'm saving 20 minutes a compile.

Netvis is crap tho, I have to wander round each machine and connect it manually (well, I did, cunning batch file usage sorted that) - but I'd like to help out other people with my spare processor time whilst I'm at work, too <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
