Cannot open editor - unable to initialize render device

Hi all, I was advised by IronHorse to start a new thread here regarding my issue with running the editor.
It has worked flawlessly for months, but after a taking a few months break from mapping I tried to open it and it would not play ball. The only message is that it's 'unable to initialize the render device, see the log file for more info'. Sadly the log file simply states the same error.
I have tried disabling crossfire, extended monitors, reverting catalyst versions 12.8 through 14.4 but no joy
Basic system specs;
AMD FX8350 @ 4Ghz
16GB 1600Mhz RAM
2x ATI HD6950 2GB
Currently running catalyst 14.4
