Same here. I can join other players through steam though, when they invite me for example. Everything else works fine, it seems to be just the server browser.
I thought maybe it has to do with ns2+, but i disabled all mads and still got the problem.
I found a solution that at least partially works: If you know the servers IP you want to connect just open the console with "~" (its "^" for german layout, the key under the esc key) and type "connect <ip>", so for example: "connect 85.229.121.196:27015". You can find the ip adresses of all ns2 servers here: hive.naturalselection2.com/servers/whitelist
I hope this helps you guys. At least you can play now, that's the most important thing right?
You can find the ip adresses of all ns2 servers here:
Good workaround. I think this server list is even better though: ns2servers.devicenull.org/ because it shows all servers (not only the whitelisted ones) and it also shows the player count (updated every five minutes).

is there some console command like waiting for place?
I don't think so, they would have added it to the normal server browser when there would be a way. I only know about this thing where you can get in some kind of queue when you have a reserved slot, but I'm not sure how this actually works.
The Server Browser is Still not working. I can only Connect over Friends or the "Reconnect" command from the Console.
After a short Playtime on the Server i can use the Server Browser while i am still on the Server and sometimes i disconnect i can use the Main Menu Server Browser until i restart the game. How can i fix it?
@Flugstein and @Shadow_GER For you queueing you can use the steam serverbrowser: Add the server as favorite. Add 1 the port. For example you wan't to join 148.251.50.39:27015
add server 148.251.50.39:27016. Then right click the server > Connect > Connect when spot gets free.
Hopefully the crashing is fixed in patch 268 which is supposed to launch today.
Another workaround is to add your favorite servers to the Steam servers (View — Servers — Favorites) and join them. You can join several servers at once unlike when using the in-game browser. Too bad that NS2 servers don't show up at the "Internet" tab, seems that they don't cooperate with Steam master servers. Also, the Friends tab shows the servers your friends play at and allows you to join them.

I had this issue for a while now but only on my laptop for some reasons, I know at least 2 guys (on laptop too) with that problem occuring. As far as I know, there's no real solution for now but you can delete your HistoryServers.json in your NS2 folder to help a bit. I mean, if you delete this file before each launching of your game, the Server Browser should work normally, but it only works once so you need to do it very often.
@rkfg I tried that with multible servers, but it says the servers don't respond.
@Pelargir Deleted the file, now the server browser at least partially works. But it crashes when I click on details and also sometimes when I use it ingame or after I disconnected and look for a new server. Also when I update the list a few times the game sometimes starts lagging very hard or crashes.
@IronHorse Router is a "Pirelli PRG AV4202N" with version 4.8.3.DWVV_TAU_5.3.5 provided by my ISP "A1 Telekom Austria". I'm wired. But I never had any problems with it.

Yep I know, but there's nothing more to do actually, it can only help when you start the game. Better than nothing I guess...

Have you tried changing steam servers? Steam > settings > downloads > download region
Have you tried limiting the Steam Server Browser Max pings per minute?? Steam > Settings > in-game > set to 250
Also can you put your router in DMZ mode temporarily to ensure it is not blocking anything?
And check the router logs for flooding.. your router should store logs somewhere (in folders or in the UI) and after failing to connect from the server you should immediately look for something like:
03/07/2010 14:01:25 **UDP flood** 213.208.162.69, 58733->> 92.52.208.121, 49687 (from PPPoE1 Inbound)
Looks like your router is sensitive to flooding, and that could definitely be what's happening as the server browser populates the list. (try that steam max pings setting!)
You may also be able to increase your TCP/UDP timeout limit to a higher number in order to prevent this flooding.
As a workaround when i had this issue using a 4G connection for a while... i would just let the server list populate for a few minutes and when everything settled completely then i'd select a server.

@DC_Darkling --> issue still occurs. There's a difference though, the game crashes on the server browser with the last servers YOU joined I guess. To define again the problem, every servers I joined in the past show up on the screen when the game crashes for some reasons. That means, in this current case, 6 or 7 servers appeared. 999ping in red next to their name by the way.
In general, delete this file allows the game to load & display the servers in the browser & of course, it cannot crash 'cause I didn't join yet any server, that's why they all show up on the list. But, when I attempt to right click or open the details menu, the game crashes again, I guess, it's exactly as if I was trying to join a server.
When the file is deleted, you can join a server, but you need to do it fast without open the details menu or something. You play, then you leave the game or disconnect. When you relaunch the game, the last servers, those you played on will show up on the browser & only this server 'cause if you attempted to join another one during your last session, your game should've crashed.
Hard to explain, I hope everyone here can understand what I meant. So, in my opinion (a novice's one), this file, or the NS2 history servers is THE issue.
rightclick file > security > users > full acess > start ns2.
What happens?
Also.. do your loadtimes suck?
This file has already full access.
And my loading times do not suck. The first one is slower than the others, can reach 10minutes, sometimes that's more 3 minutes depending of the server, map & if my laptop is lazy. The other loading times are pretty fast. <3minutes in general.

im testing a new theory that folks ns2 disk queues are to big. (so perhaps it crashes if it gives up?)
further test are possible, but get complicated fast.. Something id not advice with mere forum posts. Got time, steam add me.

I uploaded my tech_support.zip if this is any help in this case: puu.sh/aWApq/38c506926d.zip

The Update didnt fix the Server Browser crash. :-(
I think you guys have the same issue so, here's my previous post, it was more about scoreboard issue caused by NS2+ but I remember talking about this current problem: http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/134796/scoreboard-crash#latest
What is your Router model number and software version, your ISP name, the modem being used, and are you wired or wifi?

If your historyfile is 'corrupt' after one try, perhaps compare the contents to a working one? See whats different?
Yep, that's a good idea, give me yours.
But I guess this file is rebuilt after each start & stop, right?
