FPS Drop when looking through windows and open spaces

Hey guys!

There is a slight drop in my FPS whenever I look out of a window or look around in an unenclosed area. This FPS drop is not usually huge, but it is very noticeable and can make a big difference during a fight.
Here are some examples of when and where this happens:
  • 1.) In the room/area called "Courtyard" (located in the very middle of the map) on the map "Docking," if I look up into the sky (there is no roof, this area is not enclosed) it causes a drop in my FPS.
  • 2.) Looking around the room called "Relay in the map "Descent," (This room is located in the lower right corner of the map, to the left of the room called "Observation." It is the room in which you walk large through glass tubes/corridors that allow you to see outside into space above, below, and beside you) causes a drop in my FPS.
  • 3.) Looking out of the window into rain by the Marine starting point (the room at the very top of the map) on the map "Eclipse" causes a drop in my FPS.
  • 4.) I experience a drop in FPS (this drop is independent of whether or not I am looking up through the windows into space) throughout the "Northern Biodome," "Central Biodome," and "Southern Biodome" areas of the map "Kodiak."

Areas such as these, in which there are windows or large, open/unenclosed spaces, cause a drop in my FPS.

At first I assumed it was the "Atmospherics" video setting that caused the drop in FPS, but turning the "Atmospherics" setting off did not cause any notable changes in my FPS. Generally, with all settings as high as possible (except for V-Sync, which I leave turned off) I get around 50 FPS when I am not in the aforementioned areas, and about 30-40 FPS in those areas. I have messed around with various settings to see what might be the cause, but I haven't been able to determine the culprit. If at all possible, I would like to strike a balance between good-looking graphics and performance.

I have ensured my GPU drivers are up-to-date, and I made sure (via the NVIDIA Control Panel) that Natural Selection 2 uses the proper graphics card. To avoid any confusion, it should be noted that my computer is not a desktop, it is a gaming laptop. The spoiler below contains some of my system specifications. Please let me know if additional systems specifications, examples, or anything else needs to be provided.

System Specifications-
  • Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • System Manufacturer: Alienware
  • System Model: M17xR4
  • BIOS: InsydeH20 Version 03.72.24A11
  • Memory: 16384MB RAM (which is equal to 16GB RAM)
  • DirectX Version: DirectX 11
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M
  • Approximate Total GPU Memory: 4038 MB
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60 Hz)

Any and all help is appreciated,

Thanks so much!

That slight drop in FPS is due to how the rendering works in this game, using occlusion culling. (similar to how BF3 and 4 work)
Rendering only what is drawn on screen , or a nearby room.

This is why if you enter spectator mode and zoom out to see the whole map at once your FPS will absolutely TANK compared to if you were just in one room.
In other words... this is very typical behavior, but if you see any glaring issues or anything other than *slight* drops please report them here, most of the time a mapper can address it.
    Thanks!
