MISCALCULATION
Chapter 1: Off course

“Good morning hunny” said Mr. Andrews wife “Did you sleep well?”
“Yes very well how’s Courtney?” “She’s much better her temp is down and she went out to the mess to have breakfast.” “That’s good I’ll join her soon I’m going out for my shower now.” “Ok see you after work” and he shut the door. Mr. Andrew and his family had just come from a mining settlement in an area of space that had just been evacuated.
They were told to leave as quickly as possible and were given money by the shaky government for a shuttle, of course it was not enough. Mr. Andrews heard about an opening on one of the mining companies transports as a security guard and took it. (Planning to quit when they arrived at earth) He used the money he was given to pay for his wife and daughter to come with him; being a former employee of the mining company he was given a small discount. The ships living quarters were extremely small (four beds and a empty crate) all eating, washing, and changing took place in public facilities on the ship. It was enough for his family; though the trip was long at least they would be safe on earth.

He finished his shower and was walking toward the mess when the ship went into alert “all crew report to the bridge immediately” and with out a breakfast or a hello to his daughter he ran up to the bridge annoyed. When he got there most of the crew was all ready seated and the captain was about to speak, Mr. Andrew sat down “what’s going on?” he asked “not sure loud and large is about to say” replied one of the crew. Loud and large as the crew had loving named him was the ships captain and he fit the description well. “Ok its like this” he began “decks 9 and 10 are sealed off as of now, anyone near the entrances to these decks is to be stopped by security, the rest of you stay out of that area!” He was shaking a little as he spoke. “Security you are to report to the entrances of these decks and guard them until we can make it to the nearest station or base.” He seemed almost angry now. “You are under direct orders to not tell the passengers about this if they ask decks 9 and 10 are under repair, ok that’s all back to your posts.”

The crew left the room dazed and slightly scared but they made sure to tell none of the passengers they knew better then to disobey the captain on this ship.
Mr. Andrew and the rest of the security team went down to the armory to suit up for another days work. Each guard was given a vest and a small handgun not much but more then was needed to keep order on a ship like this. They headed down to decks 9 and 10 splitting up half at the entrance to 9 half at 10. Mr. Andrew sat down on the floor with his squad he was hungry and wondered how long they would have to stay here. His answer came with a loud explosion from some deck above him and what sounded like gunfire but he couldn’t tell, then over the speaker “ all security report to the bridge.”
He and his squad ran up towards the bridge but Mr. Andrew broke away and ran towards his quarters his family came before his job and that explosion worried him.
He arrived at his quarters only to find a larger metal door over the wooden one he would normally see. “**obscenity** the ships gone into lock down” he whispered to him self. He banged on the metal door and screamed “Marisa, Courtney are you in there?” They had to scream just as loudly back but he heard a yes threw the door, “are you ok?” he asked “ were fine what happened” “I don’t know I’m going up to the bridge to find out I’ll be back as soon as I can.” His throat hurt from screaming as he moved down the hall towards the bridge.
He opened the door to the bridge and saw what scared, amazed, and almost made him fall over. The captain was in tears on his chair two of the security team lie dead on the floor one had his calf torn completely off and a pool of blood around him the other had a huge portion of his chest missing and was slumped up against the wall. “What the hell happened!” he screamed to spite his sore throat the captain just pointed to a busted vent opening and the carcass of what appeared to be a dog of sorts with six inch dagger sharp claws for feat. He pulled out his pistol and shot it in the face even though one of its legs had been shot off and it was lying in a puddle of green ooze, he wasn’t takeing a chance.
“What the hell is that?” The two remaining guards looked at the captain and asked the same. “What do you think I have any idea?” the captain sobbed. “Why don’t you tell us what’s really going on captain asked James one of the guards. “We went off course last night due to a miscalculation in the ships navigation system this old piece of **obscenity** that it is.” He was still tear eyed as he spoke “I tried to dock with the space station but when they heard where we had been they ended all communication with us they won’t help us damn it!” He began to cry again “where is the rest of the bridge crew?” asked Mr. Andrew “they left ran away to the escape pods when those dog things busted threw the vents” the captain replied. “There was more then one!” screamed James, “yes the second ran back into the vent after we shot the first.” Then it hit him the ship was in lock down the passengers were trapped in there quarters and each had a vent opening. “My God we have to get them out of their take the lock down off captain now!” “Lock down?” The captain said confused “I ordered no lock down those over grown rats must be playing with the wires.” “Can’t you over ride it captain” “I’m just the captain I make decisions I don’t know how to do that.” “**obscenity** your worthless” screamed Andrew worried out of his mind now, pictures of the vent in his room busting and one of those creatures tearing his wife and daughter apart flooded his mind. “Isn’t there anyway to open those doors?” he asked. The captain handed him a card “here slid this into any door on the ship and it well open its my master key I don’t need it now.” With out another word to the captain he motioned to James to follow him and the two sprinted down the hallways pistol first towards the passenger quarters.
