Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

I am currently grief stricken, confused, anxious, nervous, melancholy about my current predicament.

For awhile now I have had an i7 870 which has performed amazingly well throughout the years, however it's slowly starting to show its age keeping up with current gen games.

Current specs are i7 870 @ 2.93 (stock)
16gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz
MSI GTX 770
3 120gb OCZ Agility 3 SDD's (RAID 0)
Some unknown crappy motherboard that doesn't have overclocking options (very limited in BIOS options)

I feel the processor is bottlenecking my system along with my motherboard as its one of the oldest parts.

I am torn in two about either buying an old discontinued top of the line p55 motherboard which is cheaper (£131.51) and overclocking it to 4ghz,

OR upgrading my motherboard and processor entirely.

Intel i5 4690k (£179.99)

MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard (£116.24)

So its £131.51 vs £296.23

Obviously I want to save money as much as possible however is it feasible? Will an overclocked 870 still survive a couple more years before a completely system upgrade?

WELP!

    It really depends.

Your 870 is a great chip. However, the results from here http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-870-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4690K show the i5 is about 1/3 faster on average.

While you could overclock your 870 to close to the i5, once again you could overclock that new i5 way faster still.

My advice? If you plan on not upgrading again within the next 3/4 years, save up for a few more months and get the i5. If you plan on upgrading soon-ish then overclock that 870 until you can afford it, but you'd only get 1/3 more speed.

Thanks @Obraxis‌, I think the wiser option would be to save alittle bit longer to future proof the system, all my drives are running on SATA II speed aswell, my max frames on NS2 are fine its just the minimum frames dip alittle to low for my liking 40fps in some cases!

Plus that gaming 5 boards colour scheme goes well with my NZXT H440 case (Black and Red) and MSI GTX 770 (Black and Red).

Its bonkers how out of production components increase in value over time, these are not rolex watches we talking about here!
