<div class="IPBDescription">Aliens vs. Replicating Nanites?</div> I re-posted this here because things move too fast in General discussion and I dont want this idea lost as so many do in the GD forum. Also, Im hoping this can make for some interesting "fiction fodder", if you will <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Ive heard alot of talk about human vs. human and Alien vs. Alien gamemodes. But it seems to me that the kharaa wont fight each other and I doubt the TSA has feuding factions (though I am not familiar with every bit of the NS liturature)
It should be easy enough to inject another race of humans into the NS universe....a corporate military force, a group of outlaws and mercenaries or some other non-TSA human group with the same playstyle as the TSA Marines but with a few slight dis/advantages.
Personally I would love to play an Alien vs. Alien match, though I dont think it could really fit the NS storyling to see a skulk killing another skulk. As I was reading the manual I noticed that there are 2 types of nanites...Fixed, like those that the marines use to build structures and such. And Replicating...a dangerous technology that can reproduce itself. This kind of microtech, combined with the nanite technology that already exists on board ships in the NS universe could be quite similar to the "bacterial network" used by the kharaa. These nanites could use the same upgrade/evolution/hivesight gameplay that the kharaa use but with its own slight advantages and disadvantages. Imagine sometype of robotic spider taking place of the skulk scuttling across a wall, dropping down and transforming into some kind of robotic gorge to build a stationary "attack mech" instead of an offense chamber!
Anyway...more weird daydreams for me!

Non-fixed nanotech. Hmm... incorporate a 'Screamers' aspect to it, and perhaps you have where the Kharaa came from. The Bacteria *could* just be the next revision on that nanotech, /created/ by that unrestricted nano in an effort to improve its own efficiency. Would explain why it's so hardy, able to head through space with ease, and only forms into larger 'defensive' organisms when a threatening presence is in the area. Flip the switch and run like h*ll, as the saying goes.
Kharaa v Kharaa matches could be handled fairly easily.. two different strains fighting for the same resources. Darwinian theory meets gladiatorial combat.
...shesh....and I work at a friggin video store :/ <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Faction Name: B.M.R.C. (Black Mesa Research Corporation)
Advantage: Highly developed technology
Disadvantage: Resources cut in half, limited range if command structure (fixed by signal boosters)
Back story:
The BMRC, was originally part of the US Military formed in the 1950's under the code-name: "Salvage Red", a program to recover downed soviet aircraft, steal the technology, and then apply the data to our own aircraft. During a rare instance, an Alien craft (not the <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo-->) crashed into the deserts New Mexico. Salvage Red was modified slightly in order to deal with this rare situation. The craft was carted off to a WW2 military base in the Nevada desert, where the first stages of the recovery processes began. After finally gaining access to the computer core inside, it was discovered that the ship was a freighter, carrying a total of three craft aboard. After many years of searching, all three craft were found. Once all three were found, it was discovered that the current facility was underpowered and outdated to deal with the computer systems and power needs of the technology.
A second base was created, this time at Black Mesa, New Mexico. Over the years, many developments in modern technology came out of the program, until the Bush Sr. administration, where the program was privatized and renamed "Black Mesa Research". During most of the 90's, Black Mesa developed advanced robotics, inter dimensional travel, and high energy weapons. But, the summer of 1998, an accident occurred that nearly destroyed the entire complex. But, this problem was quickly overcame, but at the loss of four sectors of the facility.
Soon afterward, the Administration of the base, a Mister Gregory D. Mann, staged a buyout of most of the public shares, giving himself 56% of the in the company. He soon began to expand out in many branches of research and development under subsidiary firms, they quietly gained corporate power through many decades and was the cause of many breakthroughs in all fields, until recently.
Recently, The formal announcement of the "Black Mesa Research Corporation"'s existance caused an initial rush to buy, but now the developments have become few and far between, stock price is dwindling, and the loss of major installations throughout the galaxy has enraged the members of the board, so the board decided to kill two birds with one stone, by recovering their installations, they can hopefully retrieve samples of the creature's DNA, or even a whole creature to retrieve and study, providing valuable research data. And, by taking over competitors's facilities, they can steal their research to use later.
Unit Layout:
Command type: Console. By using a advanced version of 802.11c, the commander can control many units within a large area, but due to interference by the nano-gridlock, the range is hampered severely. Range can be increased by either researching advanced transmitters, or by placing signal boosters throughout the map.
Most Structures are created at facility in the main base (structure appears between two teleport arms, where it is worked on by the units) and then Trans-dimensionally teleported to the location, but only if a unit nearby is equipped with a Engineer's waypoint pack, commonly referred as an Engypack (spawn with 1 engypack, also the command has one built in)
Resource type: limited Main pool. Due to the large power consumption of machinery, resources are instantly spit up, to thirds to power generation, one third to structure construction.
..... I've got more, but i need an opinion, what do you think?
Mr. Headcrab
PS, don't steal this, PLEASE

I believe the ortiginal short story was called "The Final Solution"
Eh well i dont exactly have the book anymore, so I cant check. I only mentioned it because i remember'd the story...
/me shrugs
I do remember that the story was about a american/soviet war though, and the americans developed the devices because they were losing. At the end of the story the robots managed to get a female replica heading in the direction of the moon base, with access codes... Goodbye the remains of humanity and stuff.
propaganda piece? Dunno about that, it was more of a codeword used by hitler and the guys at the top instead of "killing every single jew we can lay our hands on"(wouldnt look so good in documents).
He also wrote the story behind Blade Runner ("Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"), Total Recall ("We Can Remember it for You Wholesale") and Minority Report ("Minority Report").
I think he also lost a bet with L. Ron Hubbard about founding a religion, but mayble that's just hearsay.
Love his short stories. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Oh, and in the movie they don't have chainsaws.. they *are* chainsaws. More or less. Little trilobyte-shaped robots with circular sawblades as part of their bodies that would jump out of the ground and slice you up if you didn't have an ID tag.
Good movie, but the book was better. It was set on Earth, after all.. no need to go to the moon. Plus.. anyone that's seen the movie. It may just be my imagination, but when I saw that thing in the theatre, I could swear that the bear at the end sat up and waved.
Still.. this WOULD be a pretty cool supposition, to justify alien v alien matches. And give the Kharaa a little more backstory.
