Diving knives break?

in Subnautica General Discussion
After starting a new game today and using my diving knife for around 45 minutes (harvesting kelp and stabbing fish) when I stabbed at a passing air bladder the blade disappeared from my hand/inventory and a quick search of the immediate area didn't show it floating near by.

This leads me to ask if the knives break over time? Or if this was indeed a random bug?

    I haven't had a knife break for a while, but I can confirm that when they used to be made with emery and metal, they would break after a certain time and need replacing, so it is probably intended.

    Ah, in that case it would be nice to have the nice give a "durability %" display somewhere on screen (like the energy charge of the sea glide) until such time as they implement some textures to show degradation of the blade since currently it can be somewhat disconcerting to have the knife unexpectedly break without any warning it's nearing the end of its lifespan.

    I haven't had a knife break in a long time. it may be down to a very small random chance or some kind of abuse like attacking rocks.

    Since the recent update and loading my save I found my previous diving knife was returned to my inventory, so apparently it was a big of some sort.
