Hand Cranked Grapple/Tether/Spear Utility Gun + Upgrades

There has, and probably will always be, a wanting for a spear gun in a sea game. The issue with it is many want it purely for a weapon and the devs fear it will be used as a commando style combat weapon. I suggest a more utility approach to make use of it as a grappling device over a weapon.... that and spear fishing will always be fun.

A spear gun with a roped spear that is upgradeable with many tool functions. The spear gun can do some damage (can't kill a stalker in one hit), and requires the spear to be cranked back making it more or less useless as a weapon. It can work as a poor mans propulsion cannon, requiring no energy and cheap resources to craft.

If any kind of currents or gravity pulls or even foot grabbing tentacles were added into the game, the use of a roped spear gun pulling you out of danger would be tremendously useful. The other use of it is allowing the capture of fast fish before you get close enough to scare them (if you can hit them), and being able to reel in the spear with the hand crank (because spear fishing is fun!). It can also reel in the player if shot into an object. If shot into large moving creatures (Stalkers or bigger), however, the player would be going for a ride. Perhaps latching onto a large fast creature and then reeling in close enough to break off some mineral deposits that accumulated over time with rare special resources. Upgrades would further extend the use of the spear gun tremendously.

Upgrade: Motorized Crank - Utilizing a motor and now requiring energy, the rope is quickly and effortlessly reeled in. This allows for fast movement when used as a grappling hook, or pulling in fish quicker (or faster toward the fish if being drug by a large fish). This makes the tool useful for quick escapes if used correctly.

Upgrade: Grounded Crank - Allows the device to be implanted into the ground after firing it so that the player can use it to pull larger objects with the crank, such as stones and boulders that normally require several floaters to remove. Changes the projectile from a spear to a multifunction clasp, preventing the impalement of creatures and adding in the ability to drag man made free floating structures and devices (such as a storage cube). This is great for dragging up equipment from places that are too deep to stay too long. Fill a box and crank it up. Rope is exchanged for a cable, cannot lose the attached clasp, cannot be cut free.

Extra- Defensive Spear Gun (still not much use as a real weapon)

Now, the main point of this was the utility of a distance roped tether device and how it can add interesting things, but I had some thoughts on it as a defensive device as well, but not actually for pure combative use. Just a little bit of my description of how it can have a place in an exploration game despite being a "weapon".

Initially have it start out as a cranked spear gun, no rope. Kills distant prey fish for food before they see you get close enough to run. Still not good for working against stalkers. Then allow it to turn into one of two other spear gun types - the utility tool type or a defensive weapon.

Hand Cranked Spear Gun - A weak spear gun that requires slow loading followed by slow cranking to get a spear ready to fire. The lower power makes it only useful for prey fish, but has a chance at making a stronger predator recoil backwards and give the player a chance to escape.

Hand Cranked Roped Spear Gun - The previously described utility spear gun. Spear gun + diving reel.

Air Pressured Spear Gun - Using an air tank, it now uses air from the player to fire. This lowers the reload time significantly, since no crank is needed to "charge" it, but the loading is still slow. It also gains some power, now enabling the player to hit Stalkers and Bone Sharks hard enough that they lose interest and swim away for a short duration due to the impact. The damage gain is barely more, as it's not a killing device.

From here, the defensive type spear gun splits.

Compact Spear Gun - Shorter, and thus less inventory space and less weight.

Electrified Spear Gun - Charges each bolt with an electric charge, allowing for it to make even a Reaper Leviathan back off for a little bit (you probably can't kill it with this, just give it enough pain to back off so you can swim for the cyclops, a cave, or get a little further out. Uses energy for each shot. Can also be used in an exploratory method in order to cause various "living structures" to "open up" for the player to retrieve various resources. Can also temporarily knock out some fish, such as Stalkers.

I think when you shoot it, you have to crank it in before you can shoot again because the spear is were it landed, reusing the same spear. I think spear guns have a 20-40m rang, by giving the utility spear gun 20m of rang and the air pressured spear gun 35-40m of rang would balance it more as a tool and less as a weapon. Giving it the same damage as a knife. When you shoot a Stalker or bigger you have to crank it until you get close take the spear out of the fish before you can shoot it again, which would likely get you bitten if not killed making it a good grappling/fishing tool but useless as a weapon on anything bigger than a RabbitRay.
