Game File Save Sizes

Hi Devs

I mentioned this in another topic a few days ago but would like to ask this separately in its own dedicated thread.

Why on earth are the game save files so big in this game? My latest one is 1.28GB. Its almost as if huge chunks of the game itself is being saved. When I press "Save" in the options menu there's only a few seconds delay before the saved message pops up, but surely 1.28GB of game data has not been saved to the disk in just a few seconds. Therefore is the game automatically saving in the background as we play? (Perhaps that would explain the lag I keep getting, despite the high specs of my computer).

When I downloaded the game from Steam I am sure it said that the game itself was about 6GB in size. Well, if the game saves keep growing in size in the way they do, the save files will soon be as big as the game itself. I have never seen a game use so much disk space for game saves. It's not as if though each time we save a game we are given separate saves allowing us to choose one to go back to. Instead whenever I press save it seems to over write the previous so there is always only one save game available to load up.

Perhaps each time the games saves it is not deleting the previous one but just amalgamets it so it continues these huge leaps in size, yet it only registers the lasts one available for loading? I have no real idea how these things work.

So, please, why are the game save files so huge?

Thank you.

My guess is it is because they store the entire voxel world as data. There was discussion about 6 months ago regarding making the saves much smaller - by only saving the "changes" made (by the player) to the voxels, and leaving the rest as initialized by the game. However, I am not certain where that ended up.
