Self-Destruct!

I just randomly had a thought. What if something goes wrong? With the upcoming DNA stuff, messing around with life could get you into a bad place. What if injecting Reefback DNA into a Stalker just makes a rapidly-multiplying strain of Reaper? You can't simply deconstruct, because they're right there. Well, then you have no other choice.

Cleanse the evidence of your failures in a nuclear fireball.

I'm thinking a medium-cost room, about the size of the current "large compartments," which is a must-have for any base taking risks. It would only need titanium, computer chips, and an advanced wiring kit or two, but it would make a compartment with a machine that extracts the hydrogen from a little bit of water, making essentially a fusion bomb. If things go south, go to this room, press the "Well, crap, I messed up" button, and get at least 500 meters away before the 5 minute timer expires.

Problem solved.

I mean, a placeable, portable time bomb might be a bit easier to use.

A placeable time bomb... I like it. One question. Is it nuclear? My point with this whole "emergency self-destruct" is so you can destroy not only the base, but whatever it was that made you want to perform the destruction in the first place. As I commented, if something goes wrong and you have a Reaper infestation, you would want to be sure that they would be consumed in the same fireball of destruction as all of your own hard work. Also, this wouldn't just kill things outright, it'd despawn them, due to the fact that they would be vaporized by the blast.

    >Reaper shows up
    >Throw time bomb
    >Reaper is attracted to blinky light on bomb
    >Eats bomb
    >Timer hits 0
    >Reaper goes "THAT'S A SPICY A-MEATABALL"
    >dies

though if you really want them to just despawn, make it a Warp Bomb, that harmlessly plucks anything in the blast radius out of reality, and shoots it through the 4th dimension to somewhere else, out of sight, out of mind.

Obviously it would suck if the player got caught in the blast and got teleported in front of another monster, or to the surface of the sun, or into the void of space

When you said that, I immediately knew what must be done. However, this explosive idea (pun intended) isn't meant as a weapon, it's a last resort. You can't just throw a bomb down a reaper's throat without any thought of ramifications, it's to sacrifice everything in an area to ensure a threat is eliminated. Maybe not nuclear though. I like the idea of teleportation onto the surface of the sun.

Plus I don't think a Reaper imploding into a wormhole it just ate is very "family friendly"

You might have a point... But keep in mind, wormholes aren't really understood. Maybe it won't be a small hole that the reaper implodes into, maybe it's a fixed-radius blast that just teleports everything inside of it 5 light-years away. The blast would expand to max size instantly, and have a jet-black appearance. After the original detonation, the wormhole would continue to port everything touching it to space, shrinking back down to nothing over the course of about two seconds, revealing the disappearance of whatever unfortunate creatures were in the area.
