Mac - Can't Open Cheat Console

First of all, I love this game! I grew up on the Florida Gulf Coast, and I feel like I'm back there swimming underwater.
I unfortunately have a Mac at work (no, I'm not goofing off - I only play at lunch). I am able to activate the overlay by pressing F3, but when I press F8 it doesn't give me control of my mouse to uncheck "Disable console." I've tried using the Shift, Ctrl, Option and Command keys with F8, and I've also tried every suggestion I could find online. I really would like to play without getting killed, at least in the beginning. Is there something else I need to do to make F8 work for this?

There is a happy bug that you need to open the f3 menu in order to get the console open as well. So, next time you load and want the console just open the f3 menu briefly.
