Deadly Creature Idea: The Jelly Membrane Mimic

When you dive in the Grand Reef around the Membrane Trees

Membrane_Tree_%2820%29.jpg

this lurking horror is a mimic that looks like the Membrane Tree, but suddenly comes alive as a big floating jelly towards the player, trying to envelope him. Unprepared and without caution the player will get sucked into the translucent jelly mass and dies slowly while he sees his health drain and his inventory gets sucked into the jelly.

Countermeasures:

Caution, the Jelly Mimic is slow.
The heat knife, welder or laser cutter equipped, as the thing fears heat, and the heat cuts through the jelly mass.

That is actually a really cool idea. Might be nice to see other sorts of mimics, like small fish that look like for instance spadefish with minor differences.

I thought of a mimic type creature, but it was just a crab with a quartz deposit on its back.

And then once you d'aww and are defenseless an eye the size of a man opens below you? =3
Jokes aside though, I think things like that would be a real addition to this game. Always nice to see more things that don't want us dead.

I like the idea of a "mimic" creature. Several Earth creatures survive by pretending to be something they aren't (the Viceroy Butterfly, stick insects, etc.). Why wouldn't an alien planet have creatures with similar methods?

True, it's a very basic survival tactic. We are gonna need a far greater diversity in the creatures for that though. As in: more than 10 basic fish.

Like the partial mimic of the Black Seadevil (an anglerfish) deep down the earth ocean?

Imagine searching for some nice plants to harvest. You pull at a plant - which is unfortunately only this thing at his nose, while this devil lies digged beneath the surface ... when it emerges from below and tries to swallow you.

Or imagine swimming in the deep dark black of below 1000m (example lava caves). You can see a glowing fish in the dark and approach with your seamoth. But it was only ... suddenly the shape of something bigger comes into view and you realize that this devil is about to swallow your seamoth.

That's pretty much the gist of it. But it doesn't immediately mean they need to be bigger and badder. If you'll take a look at some of the smaller 'imitations', you'll see that they do it to scare off predators or in order to get a small nibble and then immediately scurry off.

And then of course there's bullsh!t like this one...

    Nice one.

And maybe one day we find a giant, 1000 eyed, chtulu of the deep and when we get close we see it's only a swarm of 1000 peepers.

    Lil crab like this guy
    maxresdefault.jpg
Only his back crystal is shiny and clear like Quartz

Try to pick him up he pops out and goes "Nyeeeeeeh!" and tries to scuttle away.
You can boop him with the knife to pluck the quartz off his back, which is actually healthy as it allows the crab to move faster as well as grow a fresh crystal.

I like it. What about some fish that eats his quartz?

I like these little crabs, so cute ... until one day ...

I located this cave with hundreds of crystals, marked the location and came back with the cyclops to harvest them in masses. But the crystals were all gone ... damn those crabs!

I'm suddenly reminded of harry potter when they're talking about those hidden chambers that switch around.

The real life decorator crab picks up coral, sponges and tunicates and carries them around to better blend in with the environment. So does the tuxedo urchin. Something like that would be pretty cool.
