Nature typically evolves using the simplest route to changes via evolution. Yes, there are many different branches (fish, birds, mammals, insects, etc.) but many of the species inside each genus are quite similar in looks with only slight variances.
It makes sense that what evolved in our oceans on Earth would be similar to what evolved in oceans of another world that was of a similar composition.
