yes I know the "gl_" means OpenGL but don't forget the HL engine is made from the Quake engine, which is only OpenGL.
Some "gl_" cvars work in D3D. This one does. Try it:
Place a decal on a wall then adjust the cvar until it appears good.

Sorry, but the Correction Node in my brain is screaming at me to reply to this.
Quake was actually entirely NOT OpenGL. When Quake was released, it ran purely in software mode. An update was later released (once the 3D GFX card market picked up) to include OpenGL support.
I think you're thinking of the Quake3 engine, which IS only OpenGL <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> But Half-Life wasn't made with the Quake3 engine. Although, I really, really, wish it were.
