Instead of designing expensive NPCs design a simple futuristic alien looking digital station.
Use your creative minds, as this is a game where everything is possible.
Uses for digital station:
1.Many stations with random placement for discovery and reward
2.Fast travel between station (or create warp gates and make a quest at the station that directs you to this "warp gate" just more to do in game and explore"
3.Can place station near important locations (example large underwater cities or ruins)
4.Station can be used for a basic trade system with the computer or be part of a multiplayer currency at a later stage in the game
5.Place to pick up quests
6.A reason to explore, find them all, earn achievements.
7.A place for more advanced gear and weapons (mmo style progression, meaning player can only craft basic weapons and armor without the station)
8.Finding station can upgrade stats
9.I can keep going but you can easily incorporate great game ideas from other games into this game and try to do it cheaply without making it feel cheaply.

...Why do we need NPCs or equivalents?
Yeah, right. Because looking for blueprints isn't hard enough.
I most definitely don't want fast travel in Subnautica. The only form I could accept is within a seabase, but that's not necessary either. The map is just not big enough for it to be needed.
What trade? All technology on the damned planet is yours. if that big ass computer wouldn't want to give you something you need, you just smash it and take it.
Not sure if we mean the same thing, but stations tend to be... big. and multiplayer that would have a currency is definitely against the spirit of the game.
I like the idea of having quests in Subnautica, but I'd much rather have them sent by the rescue team to my PDA (kinda like in "the Martian" movie)
Achievements should be built around the game, not the other way around. And we have plenty of reasons to explore already, if we get quests it will be enough.
No, no, and no. Crafting is already pretty challenging in Subnautica without the added hassle of going to specific spots. As for progression, we already have that (life pod -> simple sea base -> Seamoth -> cyclops -> advanced tools -> Aurora)
...there are no stats. And let's keep it that way.
The thing is- Subnautica is so good specifically because it's so different from other games.
P.S. Don't take my post as an offense, I just didn't like the direction of changes you suggested.
