wow none of this type of thread for a while and then two pop up simultaneously. just like the buses.
I head about it from a friend. downloaded it as soon as it came out. got to play it about a week after as I was busy that week and nearly every server ( not that there were that many ) was jampacked all the time.
Played aliens from the start and though didn't have much of a clue at the start, as manual was rather hard going and so I skipped it, I enjoyed it immensly.
PlanetHalf-Life was plugging the mod for ages, I got it when it came out for public trial. I also started with the aliens first, and as many players had no clue for the first few hours. I fell in love with it right away, it seemed like a perfect blend of FPS/RTS (as perfect as a 4 year old engine can get that is) I play random team mostly these days, still love it
I heard about a looong time ago, visited the site, thought it looked cool. There was no indication of when it would be released, so I didn't really think on it much after that. Then, about week before its release, Penny-Arcade stated that it would be released in, well, a week. So there I was, Nov. 3rd, at MPCON XI (a giant 150 person LAN, basically) when I remembered that it should have been released by then. So I downloaded it lickity-split (MPCON is held at the University of Michigan - Dearborn, and as such has university-speed connections) and got on (It was about 1:00 or 2:00 am so most of the LAN based gameplay had died down, so I wasn't missing out on much by playing a game online while at a giant LAN).
It was really cool, that first night, but the pings were AWFUL. >500 across the board on every server I tried. THANK GOODNESS FOR PATCH 1.01!!!!!!!!
A guy asked everyone in the server if they have tried the new Natural-Selection MOD...
This was a CS server, and 2 days after release...
And yes, i liked it the first try.. more then i liked CS the first time
Many members of MMZ went to a computer expo in California and first heard about NS there. We have been anxiously awaiting its release since. Personally, I downloaded it the day it was released and havent slept much since!

Also, with there being precious few NS public servers in the UK for the first fortnight, I mostly played on bookable servers with the clan, which was very handy as we could all learn the game together.
Gamespy newsletter mentioned it just before Halloween. Downloaded it at work (Canadian College), burned it and installed it that night. I've been playing most every night since. Sometimes till 3 or 4 am. I think it's a fabulous game. I live in the sticks and the best I can get is a 28.8 modem connection and it doesn't work too bad. There are times when the lag gets real bad but what the hey!
Well, I heard about it from my friend (ChronosXVII).. But on the first try I didn't like the game..but within hours I got addicted >...This is a pretty good game, especially when you are really good at it.
An excerpt from my review at CoFR FPS:

QUOTE

I had heard about Natural Selection almost from the moment the mod started production. I was a mapper working on the Stargate HL mod at the time, with fellow mappers Manah and Crinity. When the Stargate HL project folded, both of these mappers became interested and involved in something called "Natural Selection," Crinity in an advisory capacity and Manah as a mapper for the new mod.
Manah was telling me about this mod and showing me screenshots, but I must confess, at the time I just didn't "get" it. I've never been a big fan of Real Time Strategy (RTS) games. I haven't played Starcraft (which everyone is comparing this mod to), but I had played Command and Conquer (another comparison), and they just seemed ho-hum to me. Point here, the little computer guys move here, point there, the little computer guys go there. Big deal. I was also disappointed at the "aliens" in this mod. I guess I was expecting Giger and instead I see a dog with spines for legs, another dog standing on two legs, a pudgy badger and something that looks like a cross between an elephant and a triceratops....
However, as the mod progressed I began to take more interest. The screenshots were looking VERY interesting. Incredible detail for the old HL engine. And then the trailer came out and I was like "Oh, wow!" I had to get this mod and try it out.
I was very impressed with my first experience. I was very pleased that the mod emphasized team play and penalized lone rangers (wander off alone and get eaten). I was disappointed at the number of jerks that thought this would be a romp in the park like CS and wouldn't work as a team. But I guess that was to be expected, because nothing like this has been seen before. ...

Just going though my favourites folder and found planethalflife and thought *I havent been here for a while i'll check it out*. And on the front page was Natural Selection is finally out(or something like that), me not knowing what that was thought *I may as well give it a go, Im bored of CS and DoD at the mo...*
Now who knows how long later here i am on a mods forum typing things about the game,
Im glad i downloaded it, its the best game i have played all year(Mods AND Proper games).
Heard about it on GameFAQs, so I figured that I might as well give it a shot. That "shot" has now turned into playing it from release, hehe.
Well the only thing i wish i could change is the fact that I got the game too late and now friends think I'm like a noobi...but I've gotten really good at it since ive played for weeks now.
Well mostly i looked at alot of mods to play with in my old days coz i was getting bored of cs and i played mods i liked to look at and waited for various different mods and basicly i came across this one and just waited til its release coz it woz looking goooood
