Repopulation after radiation killing off life

Since it takes a little while to get yourself together and build the things you need to get to the Aurora to stop the radiation leaking, there are a ton of fish and wild life that are dying. Also, given that it seems the Aurora seems to be a research type ship for exploration (no guns, no weapons fragments in game, etc) it would fit the theme of the game for the player to be concerned about wildlife. It seems as if they came to study the planet but crashed. Now they are inadvertently killing the planet slowly. So part of the end game I think would be to repopulate wildlife.
It'll work (I think) because
The radiation doesn't even have to kill off the entire planet (unless you're really lazy)...maybe just the area that is already affected.
It'll work (I think) because
- it takes a while for the player to gather equipment for to stop radiation leaks
- it makes the player quickly build a tank for food and for repopulation
- adds an additional "mission" to the story/purpose
- eggs can be used for this reason too
